On 1978 to 1984 240 models with air conditioning, the power steering pump is driven off of the air conditioning compressor. As it can cost $600 to $800 to repair a non-functioning system and convert it to the new R-134 coolant, many owners have opted to do without AC. If the compressor clutch fails, it can be very expensive to repair just to regain the use of the power steering. Our bypass kit consists of a machined aluminum spacer that relocates the power steering pulley so that it can accept a belt directly from the front of the crank shaft. A new, longer belt and longer pulley bolts are included. Belt adjustment is the same as with the original routing. An easy-to-install solution to a common problem.
Not sure about your model year? A key determining factor is whether your power steering pump has 4 bolts holding the pulley on. This kit is just for the bolt on style pulley. If your model has a press on style pump, use our later kit, IPD # 139672.
