Wheel and Tire Terminology

Cameron goes through some of the common terminology regarding wheels such as hub, hub bore, offset and tire sizing.

Cameron from IPD talks to you today about common terms and acronyms you'll hear about wheel sizes and tire sizes. The first one we're going to talk about is going to be bolt pattern. There are a few things that determine whether or not the wheel fits on a car and how it fits.

Starting with the bolt pattern, as I said so we're going to look at this wheel right here and look right here right where the bolt holes are this particular wheel, and a lot of other Volvos use 5 on 108 bolt pattern, and that's how the bolt patterns are going to be. That's how bolt patterns are going to be, and there will be one number and then another number. The first number is going to be how many bolts hold that wheel onto the hub. In this case on a 5 on 108, it means that there are 5 1 2 3 4 5. The second one 108 is the diameter of the circle in millimeters of that bolt pattern. So if we imagine a ring like this 5 on 108 means that there are 5 bolt holes around the outside on a circle that's a hundred and eight millimeters in diameter. Now if you're used to American car terms you'll hear this as like a five on four and a quarter or different numbers like that same thing is just a metric versus standard. The first number is always the number of bullets, and the second one is the diameter of the circle that those bolts bolt on.
