Coil failure is becoming a pretty common issue on the "short six" Volvo models as they age. We have seen catastrophic coil meltdown on our own project vehicles here at IPD in normal daily usage. Usually this will just make a cloud of acrid smoke under the hood and a misfire, but damage to the coil harness is certainly a possibility.

Additional Technical Information

3.2i and T6 "short six" engines seem to be particularly hard on spark plugs, and worn plugs are also hard on ignition coils. We recommend spark plugs every 60,000 miles on these engines, and it's an especially good idea to change them if you've got a failed ignition coil pack.
