Older 3-speed automatic transmissions like the BW35, BW55, and AW55 3-speed found in the Amazon, 1800, 140, and early 240s used Ford Type-F specification transmission fluid. Unlike modern ATFs, this is a "high friction" fluid with no friction modifiers in its formula; using a more slippery Dex/Merc fluid in a BW35 with original clutch and brake bands will result in slipping.
Classic car lube specialists Mag 1 have come to the rescue with their Type F ATF. While a B18 may not be a 351-powered drag strip monster, its transmission needs the same kind of care to deliver quality shifts.
