Product Description

If you've got radiator fan codes, your air conditioning keeps cycling on/off (especially noticeable if your defroster stops working at idle), or if one of your radiator fans has stopped working, this fan controller may be the culprit.

P3 Volvos like the S60/V60 and XC60 have all electric radiator fans, with the fans only coming on when the ECU reads high enough coolant temperatures to cycle them. Most US-market 6-cylinders have a dual fan setup, with this controller taking the ECU's signal and ramping the fans up and down.

Volvo only sells a complete fan/controller/shroud assembly, but belt and cooling system specialist Gates sells the failure-prone controller on its own. If you're having any of the issues listed above, this controller is a good intermediate step before shelling out for a complete (and expensive!) fan assembly.

Additional Technical Information

Installation is very straightforward: press and pull to release the main plug and both fan plugs, and use a stubby Phillips screwdriver to remove the single top screw. Tilt the unit out at the top and then slide upwards to free the locating tabs from the radiator fan shroud slots.

These units are exposed to moisture and weather extremes, so carefully check and clean all connectors and make sure they're firmly seated during reassembly, and add some dielectric grease if you have it. The car may take one or two key cycles to adapt to the new module; once the car is fully up to temperature, you'll know it's working when you shut the car off and both fans briefly come on.

Potential Product Fitment Issues

Fits dual fan cars only. Most US-market 3.2i and T6 cars are dual fan, but check yours before ordering.

Early six cylinder, dual fan cars have two controllers instead of this single dual-output controller. If you have a V70, XC70, or S80, check the last six digits of your car's VIN:

  • V70: Fits from chassis number 22571 and up
  • XC70: Fits from chassis number 17251 and up
  • S80: Fits from chassis number 65723 and up
