Part of how modern engines get more power per liter is through knock sensors. When the ECU can detect individual engine predetonation ("knocking" or "pinging") events, it can pull back ignition timing when knock happens, allowing the engine to safely run closer to the edge of its performance envelope more of the time.
When these sensors go bad (and they're delicate, piezoelectric sensors, so they do sometimes go bad), they significantly impact how the engine runs. Since the engine can't effectively prevent pinging when it has faulty knock sensor inputs, it'll run in low performance mode to ensure it won't knock.
