We often get calls from 850 and 70 series owners about knocks, squeaks, rattles and clunks.
Common failures that can create these noises are worn out upper front spring seats or worn out upper rear shock mounts. Two areas to look at in the rear when you hear a clunk are the upper shock mounts and the bump stop retaining clip.
The upper shock mount is just like an engine mount. It will wear out over time and use. Inspect it for cracks and torn rubber. Second, there are fragile plastic clips that hold the bump stops inside the rear coil springs. When the clips fail (which is often), the bump stop will rest at the bottom of the rear coil spring and make a noise as the suspension moves.
