Hamburgsund V70R

2012-04-18 - Jonathan J

My name is Jonathan and I live in a small fishing village called Hamburgsund, known for its beautiful archipelago, just about 80 miles north of Gothenburg on the west coast of Sweden. I've owned this car for about 7 years now, the Volvo-community in Sweden and maybe particular in my region is extensive. Not driving a Volvo makes you an outsider! Most of the modifications have been done in the past 2-3 years. My primary goal with it is to have fun while driving it!

I think that the main problem with most Volvos is that they lack feeling and communication of what happens with the wheels. Therefore I have made almost everything possible to make the car communicate with the driver. For example every rubber bushing in the suspension is replaced with either delrin or uniballs, even the engine is mounted solid to the subframe! Some think this is crazy, but I love the feeling while driving the car, at the limit when the wheels loses traction I feel exactly what is happening. The IPD track spec. anti sway bar kit really makes wonders to the balance of the car.

The engine is almost as it left the Volvo factory. The most major modification are the GLT cams. I want the chassis and brakes to work the way I want before I start with a serious engine build. Many with an engine build, but an engine with almost 300 bhp is well enough in public roads.

The next big project with the car is to make the Porsche GT2 front brake calipers fit the car, I’ve decided not to make it the usual way with adaptor brackets, instead I’ll go for custom aluminium uprights (spindles). This makes is possible for me to correct other shortcomings in the front suspension such as roll center and bump steering effects induced by lowering the car.
