How Can I Tell Which Version Of Bosch LH Jetronic Fuel Injection Is On My Volvo 240?

2011-06-17 - Kevin Rutledge

There are 5 Variations of Bosch LH-Jetronic that appeared on Volvo 240 models.

The easiest way to tell is to look at the MAF sensor. There are significant enough differences that it should help you identify the LH system on your 240.

1982 B21F Bosch LH-Jetronic 2.0 (Unicorn)

This was the first version of LH to appear on a production Volvo.

There seems to be a lot of disagreement on what the actual version number is on this early system.  Some people say it is version 1.0 others say it is 2.0.

We think much of this version numbering confusion comes from the information in the Bentley Bosch Fuel Injection & Engine Management book/bible.  The book states that the first LH system on a Volvo was LH 1 and then LH 2 appeared in Europe in 1984 which we can assume is probably referring to the 2.2 variant since European market Volvo got stuff earlier than the North American market. They might be referring to the digit after the decimal i.e. 2.1 & 2.2 and completely missing the fact that there was an earlier version in 1982?   This version of LH may have never actually appeared on any European models since it seems to meant to pass some strong USA emission standards.

Cars with this version of LH were quite rare.  They seem to be meant to meet some stronger emissions standards (probably California) and only seemed to appear in a limited number of 244 models with a B21F engine.

Some characteristics:

  • MAF sensor Bosch numbers: 0280212001
  • Hot platinum wire style MAF
  • Aluminum MAF Housing w/ 6 pin plug with trim adjustment screw (under an aluminum plug)
  • Originally had a giant flame trap/arrester in outlet end of the MAF instead of a screen like later versions.  The idea is that if there is a back-fire that the flame arrestor will prevent the flame from damaging the hot wire MAF.
  • This system also uses rubber hoses between the fuel supply rail and the injectors where later versions had the fuel supply rail mounted directly on the injectors with o-ring seals.

Parts for this early system became hard to find pretty early on.

1983-1984 Bosch LH-Jetronic 2.1

Second generation of LH-Jetronic that appeared on a Volvo

  • MAF sensor Bosch numbers: 0280212002
  • Hot wire style MAF
  • Aluminum MAF Housing w/ 6 pin plug with trim adjustment.

1985-1989 Bosch LH-Jetronic 2.2

Third generation of LH-Jetronic that appeared on a Volvo 240

  • MAF sensor Bosch numbers: 0280212007, 0986280102
  • Hot platinum wire style MAF
  • Black Plastic MAF Housing w/ 6 pin plug
  • We've seen MAFs on these cars both with and without a trim adjustment screw.  It's possible that the 007 MAF had the screw and the later 102 MAF did not.  We *think* that the quality of the electronics better and the maturity of the technology meant that 102 units had no need for adjustments.

1989-1993 Bosch LH-Jetronic 2.4

Fourth generation of LH-Jetronic that appeared on a Volvo 240

  • MAF sensor Bosch numbers: 0280212016, 0986280101
  • Hot platinum wire style MAF
  • Black Plastic MAF housing w/ 6 pin plug without trim adjustment screw.

1990-1993 Bosch LH-Jetronic 3.1

Fifth generation of LH-Jetronic that appeared on a Volvo 240

  • MAF Sensor Bosch numbers: 0280217001
  • Hot filament (blade) style MAF
  • Black Plastic MAF Housing w/ 4 pin plug
  • MAF sensor can be removed from housing by removing 2 screws (although they are usually sold/replaced as a whole unit.)
