The iconic "boxy" Volvo
- Sold in the USA from 1967 through 1974 model year
- The 140 was available in as a 142 two door sedan, 144 four door sedan and 145 five door wagon.
- Models with an S suffix were carburetted while models with an E suffix were fuel injected
It was originally offered with a 1.8L (B18) 4-cylinder dual carburetor engine and in 1969 a 2.0L (B20) 4-cylinder dual carb version became standard.
In addition to several styling changes, many safety and technological advancements occurred during the production of the 140 series.
- Three point seat belts were standard from the beginning on USA models.
- Flow-through cabin ventilation system was introduced in 1970
- Electric rear window defogger/defroster was introduced in 1970
- Bosch D-Jetronic electronic fuel injection was an option on some models starting in 1971 and was offered on all models by mid 1972.
- Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection became standard in 1974
- In 1974, the fuel tank was moved inboard as a safety feature to reduce ruptures during rear-end collisions.

- B20F - 2.0L Fuel Injected (1972-1973 D-Jet / 1974 K-Jet)
- B20E - 2.0L High compression D-Jet fuel injected (1971 only)
