Changing Ignition Points

On older cars with point ignition such as 544s, 122s, 140s, and 1800s minor tune-ups are typically necessary every 6,000 miles. This usually includes cleaning and/or regapping points and checking spark plug condition and gap.

At 12,000 miles points will need to be replaced if they weren't at the 6,000 mile tune-up. The condenser, cap and rotor should probably also be replaced along with the plugs at this time. An ipd tune-up kit will address the necessary electrical items.

For newer cars that have electronic ignitions such as 200s, 700s, 900s, 850s, and the 70 series, cap and rotor will probably last 30,000 miles before replacement is necessary. While you’re there, swap in some new plugs as well.

The suggested replacement interval for ignition wires is every five years or 60,000 miles, except on turbocharged models which are recommended at three years or 40,000 miles due to the heat and environment they operate in. The exception would be a super high quality wire such as Magnecor.
