What Is A Chassis Number And Why Do I Need It To Figure Out What Parts Fit My Volvo?

2011-01-24 - Kevin Rutledge

Volvo is notorious for changing engine parts in the middle of production model years. When they do this, they make a notation in their parts catalog stating what engine serial number range or chassis number range a product fits.

If you're looking at a part that has a "chassis break" to determine fitment, that means the part fits cars within a certain chassis number range. In Volvos, the chassis number is the last six digits of your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) with any leading zeros removed. (i.e. 000123 = 123)

For example, a 2004 V70R with vin YV1SJ52Y142403608 will have chassis number 403608. If you're looking at a part that says it fits "from chassis number 400000 onwards" or "VIN 400000-" or similar, that part will fit. Conversely, if the part's fitment warning says "up to chassis 399999" or "VIN -399999", the part falls before your car's chassis break.
