Volvo's conventional 4-speed automatics use a conventional ATF, and this Total Fluidmatic D3 Dexron III / Mercon rated fluid is just like what it came with from the factory. It has a higher viscosity appropriate for older transmissions versus modern LV fluids, and in addition to its Dex/Merc rating, it carries ZF and Volvo type approvals for these older transmissions. So, top up and keep on truckin'.
Additional Technical Information
Early Volvo 3-speed automatics such as the BW35, BW55, and AW55 called for Type F transmission fluid instead of Dex/Merc. Type F fluid is "high friction" without any modern friction modifiers in it, so this fluid should not be used in transmissions calling for Type F unless the transmission has been serviced and the clutch and brake bands inside have been replaced with modern friction compound components.
