Timing belt failure on these engines usually results in catastrophic engine damage. This is because they are non-clearance engines and belt failure means the valves will hit the tops of pistons. We recommend timing belt, tensioner bearing and idler bearing replacement every 70,000 miles.

Contrary to popular belief, the most common failed components are the tensioner and idler bearings. It is actually more rare for Kevlar/aramid fiber core belts to come apart by themselves on these models...but a failed bearing will shred a timing belt in a hurry.

We also highly recommend replacing the water pump when replacing timing belt components. The timing belt drives the water pump, so it's easy to replace "while you're in there" when the belt is off. See Related Products below for water pump options.

1994 850 models used 2 different timing belt configurations.
This kit fits 1994 850 models with engine serial number 131035 and higher. Fits all 1995-1997 850 models.

1998 S70/C70/V70/XC/R models also used 2 different timing belt configurations. This kit fits 1998 models up to engine serial number 1266127
