An essential part of your Volvo's AWD is the Angle Gear Sleeve/Collar, which is toothed mechanical coupler connects the output shaft of the transmission with the input shaft of the angle gear on 6- and 8-speed automatic Volvos.
If you're hearing grinding noises on hard takeoffs, or if you heard a loud clunk one day and lost your AWD, it's possible the teeth on this gear collar have stripped.
