The thermo-time switch helps with cold starting by completing the circuit to the cold-start injector when cold, adding more fuel to the mix similar to pulling the choke when cold-starting a carbureted car.
The thermo-time switch grounds the cold start valve circuit when cold. There is an bi-metal strip (thermal contact) inside the thermo-time switch that will disconnect the ground connection for the cold start valve at a specific temperature. The bimetallic strip has a heating coil around it, so the switch opens on a sliding time scale based on temperature: as long as 8 seconds at -20 celsius, but it heats up faster and thus opens sooner when the engine isn't as cold.
This switch is made by Bosch, rather than the OES for Volvo, VDO. It's used in VW/Audis and BMWs, and the shape of the connector is slightly different, but it's compatible with the Volvo style connector and has the same threads, temperature operating range, and activation time. As the VDO switch is discontinued, this is a good retrofit option to get your car back to healthy cold starts.
