If you see a "Depress clutch pedal to start engine" message in your car's instrument cluster display, or if you're having drivability issues with bucking/surging when shifting, it's likely your clutch pedal position sensor is bad. Pop in this new sensor, calibrate it per the steps below, and get your manual back on the road!
Additional Technical Information
This is a precision analog sensor: a potentiometer relying on X resistance in ohms at Y pedal position for the ECU to sense when and how quickly the clutch is being depressed so it can back off fuel and ignition at a matching rate for a smooth shift. Therefore, when replacing the sensor, it's important to calibrate it after installation:
- Starting with the car off, turn the key to key position II but don't start the car
- Fully depress the clutch pedal over about a second
- With the clutch pedal still depressed, shift in to 1st gear, then start the car
- While still holding the clutch pedal in, press the Cruise Control button to turn it on, then shift in to Neutral
- Gradually release the clutch pedal over about a second
- Turn off Cruise Control
