When the neutral safety switch fails (aka: PNP switch or gear position sensor) it will do one or more of the following:
* The car won't start
* Transmission light comes on (up arrow) and the check engine light comes on
* The reverse/back-up lights don't come on (these are not monitored by the bulb-out sensor)
This switch lives in a hazardous environment as the vent for the battery discharges the gaseous vapors from the battery directly above the switch. Therefore they fail more often than they would without those conditions.
