Future Cars Blog: 1977 EC

2019-12-23 - Megan Russell

Long before Tesla Motors hit the scene, Volvo was considering an electric future. During the 1970's oil crisis, Volvo was motivated to launch a full electric concept. They ended up building TWO fully electric concept vehicles, both being the first electric concept car.

The "EC" comes from Volvo's simplicity in chassis naming and quite literally translates to "Electric Car". Simple yet effective marketing.

Volvo's little (only 268 cm long) model was a two-seater. Integrated with the rear axle, the drive unit developed 9.5 kW (13 hp) and delivered a top speed of 70 km/h.

The Volvo EC looks like the first toaster car, what do you think of this marvel of it's time?
