Acquisition Announcement

Portland, Oregon – March 25, 2014 –Import Parts Distribution (IPD) is pleased to announce that it has been acquired by Stuart Hockman, who is also the company’s new President.

IPD is a Volvo Automotive Parts Specialist that was founded by Richard Gordon in 1963. IPD began with humble beginnings on the racetrack. In an effort to finance his racing aspirations, Richard began developing aftermarket performance parts for Volvos. IPD quickly evolved into a leading retailer of OEM, aftermarket and specialty products for the Volvo automotive community.

One of the very first car lines Stu imported was none other than Volvo and accordingly, this was the start of his long association with Swedish clients all over the USA and Europe. Not long into his career, Stu heard about a company called IPD in Portland, Oregon, that was primarily selling Swedish replacement and performance parts to the retail public.  A short time later, IPD became his number one client for his entire career. Richard and Stu had a lot in common in that they were both true blue car enthusiasts. Both had a passion for racing. Richard raced a Volvo 142e and Stu raced an English Elva Courier Mk II over 10 years.Stuart (Stu) Hockman’s career in the automotive parts business started in 1976 when a close friend introduced him to a gentlemen by the name of Peter Neuwirth. Peter was the son of an icon in the auto parts business, George Neuwirth, founder of Geon Industries that later became BAP/GEON. Peter left his family business to develop a fairly new concept that involved starting an import distributing company that would sell wholesale to the repair shops all over the USA. Peter’s business plan made sense to Stu so he accepted Peter’s invitation to become a partner in the new company. This chance meeting was the beginning of IMPAC.

In 1994, IMPAC merged with another company and became WORLDPAC. Over the next 18 years, WORLDPAC experienced a period of unprecedented growth that would be the envy of any corporation. Stu retired at the end of 2012 after seeing his original company grow and get sold several times. Soon after, Stu discovered an opportunity that would eventually lead him to have a chance of a lifetime to purchase IPD. Needless to say, he jumped at this opportunity, as he’s spent his entire career involved with Swedish Parts. “I now have a chance to take my many years of experience and knowledge in the import parts business in a brand new direction. For me, this was a marriage made in heaven. I look forward to utilizing my many years of experience and business contacts to take the great company that is IPD to the next level, and then some.”

IPD holds true to the values that were instilled by Richard Gordon and will continue to do so through this exciting transition. As always, IPD will continue to provide the quality products, exemplary customer service and knowledge that the automotive community has come to expect.

I hope we continue to enjoy the service IPD has given us all these years. By the way, I use parts from VP Parts, out of North Carolina . They stock Volvo, Saab and Mustang parts and are managed from Sweden. Perhaps you can coax them to join Stu . All the best, Mike Dempster, Canadian , owner of a 1963 544 imported from Sweden in 1997, and is in great condition. I also own and love my 2000 C70 Volvo, bought new in 2001.

Congratulations Stu! I'm somewhat of a new customer having only discovered IPD about 2 years ago. However, in my experience I don't know if I've ever dealt with a more professional and helpful automotive parts organization. The people are extremely knowledgeable. They spend time helping me get things right the first time. And I love dealing with that kind of company! Best wishes on your new endeavors - Russell Corvese, Morgan Hill, CA

Welcome Stu and congratulations! You have a great crew at IPD and I have used the mechanical expertise and logistical acumen of your team for all of my Volvo projects since 2007. As you've probably surmised already, it's not all about price to your customers. As an Volvo hobbyist / enthusiast, a low price is interesting, but expertise, customer service & quality are much more so. I hope to continue to do business with IPD for many years to come and look forward to hearing more from you! Regards, Thomas Failor University Place, WA

I have been IPD customer since 1983. When I heard of the change of ownership I naturally became worried to say the least. This interview has eased my anxiety. Thanks for staying in Portland, those people make very good DIY videos and will help over the phone. Congrats Stu and just make it better! Steve Woodbury Oregon coast

Welcome to IPDUSA, Stu. I'm glad an import performance parts guy bought the company. We need all the help we can get obtaining Volvo performance parts. Can we get a Stainless Steel exhaust and header for the Volvo 850 GLT?

Saturday, May 3, 2014 - RICARDO CRUZ

Congratulations Stu, and many thanks to Richard Gordon for all he did for the Volvo community. I am sure you are going to continue his task. I have been buying parts from IPD since I bought my first Volvo here in Bogota, a brand new 850 turbo back in 1995. The car has alredy almost 40.000 miles. I also owned an S40 back in the USA for almost three years. Six months ago I bought a brand new 2013 S60 T6 here in Bogot , Colombia. I am waiting for you to develop a Stage II or Stage III, or at least an ECU Flash for the S60-T6, hope you have it soon. I am also planning to buy a new V40-T5 as soon as the ones with the new super-turbo charged Drive-E engines arrive here. I was told they don't import V40 to the USA, but hope you will sell parts for that car. (By the way, is it not a V40 you are driving in the video?) Ricardo Cruz, Bogot Colombia, South America

Welcome Stu, As a Volvo owner I have bought from IPD since 1974. As the parts guy for an independent Volvo shop I have purchased from IMPAC, Impact Parts, World Wide Trading Co & WORLDPAC, so I guess I shouldn't worry about IPD's future. Carl Derry.

Stu, I welcome you aboard as an early driver of my brother's 544 and 63 1800 and now original owner of 69 1800, 80 244, 86 245, 90 245 two 94 945's all running and as a long term IPD customer. Over my time with IPD, I have come away with good products for my Volvos' and even more importantly a wealth of information concerning them. Your products are great but the customer service IPD has provided is priceless.(sorry MC) I truly hope this performance under your leadership will expand. PS. Utah has only one Volvo dealer in the state but numerous new and old Volvos. Would you consider adding to your business model a closer relationship to secondary volvo shops? Enjoyed your interview Stu. Best of luck in Portland. I was born and raised in Tigard, OR. I own a 2012 XC 60 R DESIGN and we are currently serving active duty USAF out of Mountain Home Air Force Base. Looking forward to a new Quad exhaust system a nd muffler combination to enhance the sound of this powerful machine. Also, a way to improve the speakers, radio and sound system of my vehicle of the 130 watt amplified stereo. Finally, providing Volvo owners a way to interact with our IPads much like Tesla has put together (visit Washington Square Mall). This idea was put together by your Head Supervisor in his showing of the 2010 XC-60 with the awesome looking motorcycle trailer. I asked about it but he said it was too expensive to follow through on. Please have your staff contact me with these product updates. Sincerely yours, Chad Nelson chad.nelson35@yahoo.com
