One of our customers, Zach Cherkaoui, shares with us how hunting down the perfect 240 Volvo took a little time and effort but was worth it in the end.

Well, I’ve been looking for a decent Volvo 240, or 245 for about a year now. The ones that I have found were rusted beyong belief, salvaged, needed new motors, or just plain over priced. I just wanted something decent, that didn’t need much work, that had potential. After months and months of searching, I lost hope. So I put out a wanted add on Kijiji. Two months later, I get a response that seems legitimate. I call up the guy, chat for a bit and discovered it’s a blue, 5spd, 91′ 245 wagon, and he wanted $1000. I almost lost it, because it seemed too perfect. After sending me over 20 photos, I knew I needed to have it.

Now, unfortunately the car was three hours away from my city and there was a terrible snow storm that hit, hard. So, three of my best friends and I jumped into our friends 5-series, and went to go pick her up. As lame as it sounds, I almost fainted when I finally saw this Volvo in person. It was 100% exactly the same as the pictures, virtually no rust, a small dent, and everything was in really good shape…….except for the fact that it had no rear window which was fine because that was the first thing the owner told me.

Anyway, we finished the deal, I explained my story to him, and he was suprised that a young guy such as myself would want a Volvo. I had to tell him, that my first car was a ’79 244DL sedan, that saved my life. After that, Volvo had won my business forever.

After I had the car registered and insured, I drove it to my work, stuck it on a hoist just to see what kind of shape it was really in. Once again, I was surprised. It looked really good underneath. Not much rust, the frame was straight, and there weren't that many leaks either. So, I started to make a list of the things that needed to be replaced. I didn't want to deal with the dealer because, let's face it, they usually have ridiculous prices. I did a little research, and 4 out of 5 people recommended IPD. Honestly, I couldn't believe what the part selection was like. You even stock small items such as grill clips!

Shortly after visiting your site, I had a bill of just over $1000, canadian mind you, and a big smile on my face. I've crossed off a lot of items on my list thus far, and I am very happy with the way the car looks, and feels today. Thank you IPD!

4 out of 5 people? Was the fifth person the friend with the 5 series. I currently own my mom's old '83 244 dl. With the help of IPD and my volvo mechanic, who I've known since I was in a car seat in the back of said car, the car still gets me there and gets comments.

Zach, she's beautiful! The first owner passed on a gem to you! I know that you will keep her looking good! I went cross country to pick up the Volvo that I had been wanting for years, so I can identify with your journey to go get her. Glad that you got back safely!

Wow $1,000......I've put about $9,000 parts and labor into my 1992 740 wagon, and I'm not finished. No, I didn't have it repaired at a dealer. The was a 240 wagon on eBay that the owner put $60,000 into !

Congrats! Great car. We also have a '93 'Classic' wagon , 5 spd, bought new for $23K, one of the last 1500 made. 240K miles, runs great (I only use synthetic oil), IPD sway bars, IPD aluminum engine shield, heavy duty shocks. Only rust in one spot, under the trim. I wash often and wax it at least twice a year. Its my wife's daily driver and we use it as a truck too - have hauled over 1000 lbs. of stuff to the dump. People always ask her if she'd sell it. Only issue is front seat wear so I covered the vinyl with sheepskins. The body on frame is very strong and safe. A young kid rammed me once when I was driving 65 mph and he must have been doing 90-100, stupidly racing with a friend on an interstate. Scared the heck out of me but our Volvo protected us - had a nick in the bumper and a busted brake/running light. His car was totaled. Ralph and Barbara Hohmann

Congrats to you. However I have three 240's I keep on the road-2 wagons and a sedan. One of the wagons (1992) I rode the train from from Texas to Florida to get (finally got my husband out of the minivan). One of the wagons (1991) was shipped to Texas from California, replacing the 1987 wagon that was totaled by a red light runner-AND had the wrecked car shipped to Texas also. The 91 sedan I got for $500 and have been tricking out for my son when he drives. I have two parts cars for the 240's and one 1965 544 Volvo exactly like my first car (I flew with my then 7 year old son to Portland OR to get, and yes got to go worship at the IPD store! It drove us 2500 miles back to texas)which no longer runs. I'm a fool for them. They cost a lot to keep running-all at 20+ years old, but they've saved my life more than once. I love them all. It's good to know someone else thinks this is the worlds most awesome car. Never had anything but 240 wagons and I have "Dorothea" now, and will never let her go, I think. Keep changing the oil and pcv valves!

I'm the 2nd owner of my '93 240, my wife being the first. 225k miles on it, three timing belts, 2nd set of struts/shocks, seat warmer, sway bars, custom rims etc, all supllied by IPD. Thanks IPD and Volvo!

Nice looking ride. My 245 is black and shiney, with original paint too. She is in the shop now getter a rear main seal, about 550.00 just labor. I had to break down and get it fixed because every time I went to work I left a 6" spot of oil in my parking space. I didn't want to get caught so I varied my parking spaces until soon all the parking spaces had the same oil spots. My boss made a comment a few weeks ago, and then looked at me. I said hold on, just because it's a 93' doesn't mean it's my Volvo. Then, in front of other staff he said, "let's go see". I was trying to hold everyone back but there were just too many. Too many and surrounded. Did I mention she is in the shop now. At least I will not have to by oil by the gallon anymore. Moral of the story, be faithful to her, and she will be faithful to you, and don't be a cheap bastard cause you will get caught.

I just bought a 1989 240 wagon today, $1400 in Austin, Texas to replace my 1990 240 sedan that I paid $100 for a year ago and have put $1000 into doing things like timing belt, alternator, new crankcase pulley, charging/converting the a/c, replacing various trim pieces, and fixing the sunroof. I've put 12,000 miles on it in the last year! I'm giving this car to my nephew who is in college in Nashville. Now time to fix up the newly purchase wagon. I picked up excellent looking leather seats at the salvage yard today for $35 a piece! Love my 240's and the enjoyment I get out of putting them back on the road!

It good the effort to get the care of your dream for @2000.00. Good effort. I have a 1994, 940 Volvo wagon with 416,000.00 miles and we are looking to have an instrument harness as the car runs like a charm and Ipd has been providing us parts as and when needed. Unfortunately, we have not been successful in finding an instrument harness.

I have a similar story. I was searching about a year for one of similar quality! I found one 900 miles away with only 110,000 miles, no rust and perfect interior. Also a 5 speed, year 1989. I flew to DC to pick it up and drive it 900 miles home. The first owner took immaculate care of the car and I'm happy to be only the 2nd owner and want to keep her forever! I bought a few IPD parts to fix a few small things and will be doing more along the way! Volvo love forever! Congrats on your "new" car!

I have a 1991 240 Wagon that I bought used thirteen years ago. I only have to get 9000 more kms out of her to have gone 200,00 kms. That's 200,000 kms and thirteen years of driving on a purchase of an eight year old car. No new vehicle can even come close to that kind of value. It still looks and drives like a dream.

Very nice wagon .. I'm looking for one myself. I currently have a 79' 242 another 90' 242 and I'm restoring and a third I'm adding a 740 engine and a stick. These cars are awesome ..!! Keep that baby running and she'll take care of you and your future family..

I have a 1982 turbo wagon and a 1978 244 that I'm restoring, more like updating to later 240 components. The 82 is the work horse, just rolled over 150k and still strong. Thanks to IPD I've kept mine running. I wish you many happy, trouble free miles. Keep that brick going!

Zach: I had a pristene 89' 240 sedan on the mkt. for months @ 5000.00. I had only offers in the 2500 to 3000 dollar range. You apparently were looking to "steal" one for only a thousand which I think was very unfair. Mine had only 112,000 and rather than give it away at these offers I kept it and still drive it every day. These "bricks" are one of a kind, not replaceable and approaching classic category. You get what you pay for and hey.....what else can you buy today for 5 Grand.....????? I'll send you pix if you'd like. Ed

Ed, I dont think he was looking to "steal" anything. He was looking to buy a good car at a reasonable price. You, however, appear to be trying to charge an unreasonable price for a 23 year old car. The NADA HIGH Retail on that car is only $2850. You're a dreamer.

Ken: not to mention if the odometer works, it might have a replaced plastic gear! I have never heard of a 240 with an original working odometer! That price is best case... most people want WAY to much for old volvos.

Jach: Great looking Brick! I still have my '90 240DL wagon that I bought new in 1990 for something like $21-22K. It has 225,000 miles on it and runs like an absolute clock. No oil burning and still gets an honest 26 mpg. It has been garaged the last 9 winters in a heated garage, so it loves the vacation time. I put my gas-thirsty truck away in April, and drive the Volvo until November. Last fall I replaced the timing belt, harmonic balancer, water hoses, all engine accessory bushings (poly), auto trans filter and trans pan gasket, catalytic converter, and exhaust system. Everything except the converter came from IPD. The body has a few very small dings and only one spot starting to show rust below the windshield on the drivers side. I'll have it spiffed up and repainted the original color in the next year or two. It's still cheaqp to keep! I wouldn't sell it for anything right now, and I'm lucky to have a second garage at a second house, and a wife who doesn't question why I keep it.
