Volvo has led the way when it comes to implementing the use of pollution reducing systems that often improve economy and performance. Volvo developed thermostatically controlled intake air management (hot air routed from the exhaust manifold to reduce start up emissions, fresh cool air from outside the engine com-partment once things are warmed up) and one of the first oxygen sensor controlled engine management sys-tems. Volvo was one of the first car manufacturers to meet emissions standards in the early 70's when most car manufacturers were screaming that it couldn't be done. Keep yours in good condition with scheduled inspections and maintenance.

See your shop manual for how to inspect and test the airbox thermostat, inspect and replace the air filter and pre-heat tubing.
