Billet Is Better! High Quality Accessories For Your Volvo
Billet aluminum parts have been used for industrial purposes for many decades. Billet has primarily been used in the aerospace, automotive, and machinery manufacturing due to its strength, light weight, and corrosion resistance. Billet components became popular among automotive enthusiasts and manufacturers during the 1960’s and 1970’s creating custom intake parts, valve covers, and lightweight wheels. Having the ability to customize parts while giving it an aesthetic appeal of billet aluminum made this extremely popular with early hot-rod builds.
With the advancement of CNC machining, many manufacturers adopted this process during the 1980’s and 1990’s. This revolutionized the production of billet aluminum parts. CNC machines allow anyone to precisely shape virtually anything you want out of aluminum billet materials, enabling the creation of complex designs and custom components. Over time huge advancements have been made in numerous industries surrounding billet aluminum components. Ongoing advancements in machining processes, machining technologies, metallurgy, and material properties have expanded applications while allowing any creative mind to pretty much design and make any part they desire.
Here at IPD we do our best to find products that can be enhanced, mainly cast aluminum components that can benefit being made or constructed out of a billet process, or industrial sculpting. Making the decision to create something from billet comes down to a few factors. Each part designed from billet is carefully researched by our own product development team. Is it going to be cost effective for our customers, will it benefit the vehicle, how much better can it look?
Most parts designed here at IPD from billet, are direct replacement parts that were initially made from a cast alloy. Cast parts are made by pouring alloys into a mold and allowing it to solidify. This process is generally less expensive and suitable for producing complex components with intricate detail. However, the casting process can result in internal voids or porosity, which may affect the strength and structural integrity of the final product. Just like billet, cast alloy has dramatically improved throughout the years utilizing advanced technologies. Like most products, they can be improved or made to look even better than what came from the factory. This leaves opportunity for billet aluminum parts to be designed and manufactured.
IPD creates parts from billet aluminum due to its strength and durability. Billet aluminum is also known for having high strength-to-weight ratio. Many automotive enthusiasts look to decrease weight ontheir vehicle while maintaining its structural integrity. Having the ability with precision machining allows us to design a detailed part that is visually appealing to automotive enthusiasts.
Aluminum has excellent thermal conductivity properties. It efficiently transfers heat away from the source, which is important in applications where heat dissipation is crucial. Aluminum naturally forms a protective oxide layer on its surface which helps protect it from corrosion. Most of our billet pieces are also anodized for added protection against any road grime or heavy exposure to moisture or other concerning harsh environmental conditions. Anodizing billet aluminum parts also gives the end user the ability to brand and add some “flair” by choosing specific colors that will catch the eye of an enthusiast. As you have noticed IPD chooses blue and yellow as signature colors.
IPD has been fortunate to work with many incredible machine shops. Technology has allowed us to design and create components quickly. Anything from engine components, suspension parts, and tons of accessories that require tight tolerances and aesthetic appeal. Our customers especially enjoy parts that incorporate clean lines, sharp edges, and the durable chunkiness of a component made from billet. IPD’s Billet Engine Oil Cap is a great example of something that stands out when you pop the hood of your Volvo. It’s a statement of high quality and craftsmanship. Most billet pieces are branded because it is truly something to be proud of.
So when people ask you why did you invest in a high-quality billet part for your car, the simple answer is, billet is better!
