Since we began offering performance ECU software upgrades for Turbocharged Volvos about 15 years ago, we have accumulated a vast amount of knowledge on the subject. It’s a large chunk of data and it can be a bit overwhelming to try and sift through it all in our catalogs, newsletters and website. The power of video has proven to be a very good way to communicate large amounts of information, especially on technical subjects like the ECU upgrading process.

Our software upgrade team put together a couple of videos this January to give you a better insight into the testing, development and upgrading process. Ken, Lucky, Chris and myself spent about a week producing the videos and are very happy with how they have turned out. ipd Hi Flow Turbo Downpipe

When Volvo owners want more power than our Power Packs (ECU and sport exhaust) offer, a race-bred turbo downpipe is the next step in the upgrade process to significantly reduce back pressure, allowing the turbo to spool up quicker and  thus provide much improved throttle response, torque production and good old HP (typically in the range of 15-20 HP and 20-25 lbs/ft of torque). Exhaust tone is throatier, but not really louder.

ipd downpipes utilize the highest flowing metal monolith 3-way race cat designs and incorporate high quality flex joints in the factory location to reduce vibration and stress cracking. 3” mandrel bent 304 stainless steel for highest flow capacity and long life. Oxygen sensor ports are retained as well as factory mounting points and heat shield brackets. Will pass emissions tests, but may not be legal in some states for use on cars with less than 50,000 miles on them. We are offering these upgrades for off road use only, not for use on any Federal or state highway. Downpipes include inlet and outlet gaskets, plug and play rear oxygen sensor extension harness. 1 Year Warranty.

ipd Air Management System for 2004-07 S60R & V70R

The ipd Air Management System (AMS) increases throttle response and provides a more aggressive intake growl under acceleration. Improved breathing capacity and lower intake air temperature results in greater horsepower and torque. A byproduct of our free flowing design is an addictive sound under full throttle and throttle lift (turbo woosh!!!) as the boosted air is redirected by the diverter valve.

Engine compartment temps on today’s vehicles are higher than ever. With hood seals, belly pans, air guides, and tight fitting power trains, the engine compartment doesn’t have the same empty space and airflow it once did. Factor in the high flow coolant fans moving radiator heat through the engine compartment and you’ve got enough heat to slow cook a pot roast. Using ambient air for engine consumption just makes sense; colder air is denser and can be matched with more fuel, which results in more power. Unfortunately many of the ‘cold air intake’ kits available today are merely a tube with a high flow filter on the end. While this is a step in the right direction major considerations are being overlooked that would maximize the gain. The ipd SR5T intake system addresses these issues for optimal performance.

For more than a few months we been hearing our customers ask for Ipd’s R.I.P. kit to be re-designed to include polished aluminum piping instead of powder coated stainless steel. For better under hood appearance and increased heat transfer, polished aluminum is hard to beat. Ipd’s newly re-designed R.I.P. kit includes polished aluminum pipe and nylon reinforced silicone connectors with stainless steel T bolt clamps so you can do a complete upgrade of your turbo induction system. ipd R Style Boost Gauge and Pod Kit

Ipd’s boost gauge and pod kit allows you to cleanly install an accurate turbo gauge in your S60, V70, S80 or XC90. An accurate boost gauge can provide important information relating to turbo and engine performance.

The ergonomic dashboards in these cars make it difficult to add auxiliary instrumentation. Our exclusive dash mounting pod allows the clean mounting of a gauge next to the driver’s A-pillar. (The A-pillar is the part of the body that separates the windshield from the side glass.)
The illuminated 52mm vacuum boost gauge functions well within the operating range of these models. Gauge reads from 30 inches of vacuum to 25 PSI of boost. Installation hardware is included with gauge pod. Ipd’s R gauge is a great match to the factory R models produced from 2004-2007.

Aquamist In-Cylinder Intercooling

We’ve used Aquamist systems on several of our high output turbo projects with excellent results. Typically an Aquamist system will allow your engine management to maintain full ignition advance at full load. This system is especially effective on the 2004 to 2007 R models as the stock intercooler system is inadequate when ambient exceeds 80 deg F. It is also an add on to our new stage III kit for 1994-2000 turbo models.

The main function of these systems is to suppress detonation caused by high temperature and pressure developed within the combustion chamber when the effective compression ratio has been taken beyond the auto-ignition point by a turbo (high boost). Water, with its high thermal transfer efficiency, is extremely effective for controlling not only the onset of detonation but also the production of oxides of nitrogen in modern leanburn engines like Volvos.
