Accessory Transmission Cooler -NEW!ipd's transmission cooler kit features a Swedish made Setrab hi-efficiency bar and plate cooler and high quality hoses with Aeroquip fittings. Kit includes custom brackets and lines pre-installed so installation is a breeze with the included instructions!
Takes about an hour to install with no cutting or drilling required. Our kit attaches to your Volvo's lower Air Conditioning condenser mounting bolts to centrally mount the cooler for maximum air flow. The stock transmission cooler return line is disconnected from the transmission and attached to the ipd cooler and the ipd cooler outlet line attaches back to the transmission. Volvo sold an accessory transmission cooler kit for these models for around $450 and it used an economy tube and fin cooler and plain rubber hoses you had to cut and clamp into place! Volvo discontinued their accessory kit in 2008, so we developed our own kit. This cooler is ideal for Volvos that tow heavy loads or have increased the output of their Volvo and want to protect the transmission by helping to maintain proper fluid temperatures. |
Cooling System Parts and Preventative Maintenance Tips In the toughest of times, it is imperative that all the protective features of the cooling system are operating at peak performance. As your car ages and the miles click by, your cooling system will require some preventive maintenance. Any Volvo engine allowed to overheat may succumb to extensive damage if not caught in time. When it comes time to flush your coolant, it is recommended to replace the thermostat. If your temperature gauge fluctuates in traffic, listen to make sure that the auxiliary cooling fan is running. If you cannot hear the fan, be sure to check the fan itself for a burned out motor. Occasionally, the relay to the cooling fan can fail eliminating power to the fan. Water pumps are not prone to failure, but eventually they will require replacement. Consider replacing it when changing the timing belt as a preventive measure as the timing belt must be removed during a water pump replacement. We also have radiator hoses, clamps and other cooling system parts for all models in the appropriate model sections on this website. |

Heater CoresIf your starting to smell a sickly sweet odor, seeing steam out the vents, or you’re experiencing a sticky film on the winshield chances are your heater core is leaking. A leaking heater core can also be tough to diagnose if the above symptoms don’t show up but your coolant is always low with no signs of external leaks. The carpet in 850 and 70 series is two peice in the front with the heater core in the middle. When it starts leaking the coolant gets underneath the carpet and doesn’t soak through due to the waterproofing on the back side of the factory carpet. This means heater cores can leak for quite a while before you might notice it in the interior. If you are finding your coolant level always seems to be low but can’t find any external leaks take a close look at your heater core, it might just be your culprit.

Engine Coolant Sensors (ECT)If you’ve noticed a check engine light on your 850 or 70 series Volvo and the ECM stores code 123 for the engine coolant sensor (ECT), here’s your answer! The ECT resides right underneath the thermostat on these vehicles which has been known to set a code for the ECT itself. The root cause is normally a thermostat that won’t fully close.
Replacing the thermostat solves the problem, although most repair facilities will recommend the ECT as well for good measure. If your vehicle happens to be running high performance parts, especially turbo models, consider using a colder thermostat to help counteract the added heat load. | 850, S70, V70, C70 | up to 1998 | FAE | MS-9186486E | Reg. $30.58 | | Each | | 850, S70, V70, C70 | up to 1998 | Volvo (SWF) | MS-9186486V | Reg. $47.25 | | Each | | S70/V70/C70/S80 | 1999-2001 | Volvo | MS-9125463 | Reg. $51.15 | | Each | | S40/V40 | 2000-04 | Volvo | MS-9125463 | Reg. $51.15 | | Each |
Note that the ECT sensor for 2002 and newer models is not available separately. You must replace the thermostat housing to replace the sensor. |
