Transmission fluid performs two distinct tasks inside the transmission. First it acts as hydraulic fluid to activate the various components and operate the various gears. It also provides the lubrication to keep these components from wearing. Heat is the enemy of your transmission. This is such a huge factor that it directly effects the life of the fluid. The hotter it gets, the shorter its life. Heat is generated in the transmission fluid by the torque converter. This is the hydraulic coupler that allows the car to creep along in traffic or black slowly up a hill. Most modern cars have torque converter that locks up at highway speed. In this case, heat production is practically nil. But start and stop traffic heats it up fast. Towing a trailer of any type has a great effect as well. Many modern cars have no recommended transmission fluid change interval. We feel this is false economy. If you care about your car, changing the transmission fluid between 50 to 70 thousand miles is great insurance. In most cases it can be effectively done by disconnecting one of the cooler lines and running the car. Done properly it’s really not even that messy. Our ipd kit gives you everything you need including great instructions. Whatever you do, don’t overlook your transmission, so at least you can drive to the top of the mountain. | Automatic Transmission Overdrive Fix it Kit If the overdrive has stopped functioning in your 1983-1995 240, 740 or 760 with automatic transmission we now have an economical fix for the most common failures. The most common failures are the relay, the solenoid and wiring which can run well over a hundred dollars to trouble shoot and repair. Our new Solenoid block off kit, bypasses the entire system and allows the trans to shift in and out of overdrive automatically. How many times have you used the OD button on the shift lever to shift down for hills or while towing? It’s really not necessary for most drivers.

Tech Tip: Proper Fluid for your Overdrive If your overdrive seems to want to work, but is slow to engage, shuddering and slipping, or dropping out of overdrive when the transmission is warm, then it’s likely you have a hydraulic pressure problem. The first thing to check is for the proper amount of the correct lubricant. In the case of the M46 (1976-1995), type F ATF is specified. The M41 (1962-1975) approved fluid is 30 weight gear oil. If the overdrive pump is having issues achieving enough pressure to engage, try using a thicker oil, such as 50wt or 80-90wt. Thicker fluid can be a bit more difficult to shift when it’s cold, but not intolerable. Synthetic lubricants are also recommended particularly in hot climates and for heavy use. The use of anti-friction additives is specifically prohibited according to the Laycock manual. The oil used must provide both lubrication and shear qualities that allow the internal friction clutches to operate effectively. | |
Overdrive Relays and Buttons for Automatic Transmissions When your overdrive has stopped working, the switch in the shifter could be the cause, or it could be the relay. Check out these inexpensive solutions as well as the fuse and wiring before you give in to a transmission overhaul.

Automatic Transmission Tailshaft Bushing Repair Kit A worn tailshaft bushing is a common failure in Volvo automatic transmissions that leads to fluid leaks and eventual clunking under load. Replacing the seal may stop the leak for a few weeks, but if any discernable play can be felt in the tailshaft, the bushing must be replaced to prevent future leaks and more serious damage to the transmission.
It’s necessary to remove the entire tailshaft housing to press out the bushing and press in a replacement. We have a kit available that includes the bushing, seal and housing gasket.

In-Line Magnetic Filters Oil flows through your automatic transmission and power steering system to transmit power, lubricate parts and provide cooling. Contaminants such as dirt, metal fragments and fibers cause the oil to work like sandpaper. Instead of lubricating, the oil gradually wears out the parts it’s supposed to protect. Under normal conditions, the oil can be contaminated in just 25 hours of driving.
These filters stop ferrous metal below the sub-micron level! The remaining metal and dirt is stopped by the paper element. Installing a Magnefine in-line filter will remove 99.997% of damaging contamination, making the oil cleaner than when your vehicle left the factory. And it will keep it that way. Fits most Volvo models.

Speedometer Cables and Seals A broken speedo cable puts you at risk in the eyes of the law. Common signs of failures are a noise that increases with speed and may go away when warmed up and a speedo needle that jumps around at various speeds. This is caused by cable-bind inside the sheath. Try lubing the cable, but if this does not work, replace it with one of our replacement cables. Replace the seal on the end of the cable at the trans drive to prevent leaking.
