Spark Plugs
Starting with a single product in 1936, NGK has grown to become a world leader in spark plug and engine sensor technology. With manufacturing facilities in the USA since 1976, you can bet that the NGK plugs that we offer for your Volvo are of the best quality available. We use them in our own cars with proud success and reliability. For traditionalists we offer the Bosch spark plugs.
4 & 6 cylinder all 1962-75 NGK MN-BP6HSReg. $1.95  Each
4 & 6 cylinder all 1962-75 Bosch MN-W7BCReg. $1.95  Each

Magnetic Spark Plug Sockets

Our magnetic spark plug sockets are designed to make spark plug installation and removal easier by practically eliminating dropped spark plugs. The powerful magnet within each socket holds plugs securely, plus the sockets are knurled for extra gripping power. They’re even warrantied by the manufacturer for life!

These magnetic plug sockets also attract metal particles and keep them from entering the combustion chamber. Twin pack includes both 13/16” and 5/8” sockets to fit the common sizes for early and later model engines.
Magnetic spark plug sockets MN-T1017Reg. $14.95  Pair

TECH TIP: The Benefits of Electronic Ignition in a Vintage Volvo

One of the more common questions we hear from customers who own pre-1975 B18 or B20 powered Volvos is ‘how do I get rid of my (problematic) ignition points?’  This is usually motivated by two elements: first, these distributors are more than 25 years old and the shafts develop lateral slop that makes adjusting the points to the proper gap difficult, if not impossible.  Second, and regardless of  the condition of the distributor, the points begin to wear as soon as they’re in use; their condition begins to degrade immediately.

We use and sell two products that allow the B18 and B20 engined Volvos to run without points and condensor, the Crane-Allison and the Perlux (or ‘Pertronix’).  Of these, the Perlux is the more affordable (around $90), simplest to install (two wires and one screw) and most compact (fits inside the distributor).
The “black box” unit mounts inside the distributor where the points used to be, with two wires leading out through the distributor.  The black box is triggered by a collar that fits on the distributor shaft just below the rotor.  Inside this collar are 4 magnets, 90 degrees apart.  As each magnet passes the black box, it triggers the coil.  Just like the points would do, but without any mechanical contact and thus, without any component wear.

There are two wires on the Pertronix; one red and one black.  Depending on what model you have and how it’s configured, there are several possible ways to connect the wires up.  140 series without tachometers are the simplest: the red wire connects to the + terminal on the coil, and the black wire connects to the - terminal.  122, 544 and early 1800 models that use the armored cable to protect the + wire require slightly more attention, and 1800 models with tachometers are more complicated still.  Even so, installation should not take more than an hour and the end result of never having to deal with worn, pitted, burnt or sloppy points can really make the effort worthwhile.

If this is something you’d like to consider but aren’t sure whether the installation process is realistic for you, give us a call and we’ll be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Ignitor® Electronic Ignition by Perlux for all 4 cylinder models, 1962-74
Economically and easily update your vintage Volvo to an electronic breakerless ignition system (no more points or condenser to fuss with). The small, self-contained unit fits inside the distributor with a simple two-wire connection to the coil. It provides strong spark throughout the entire rpm range and years of maintenance free performance. The ignitor system operates magnetically (no moving parts to wear out) and if the point lobes are worn on your distributor you can salvage it by installing this system. We now have a unit to fit one of the original B18 distributors (which are usually painted black and made of cast iron). B20 distributors are generally made of aluminum. For 122s and 1800s up to 1968, use kit VH3E0299 and splice into the hot (+) circuit of the ignition coil which was originally armored. Most have been converted to a conventional dual terminal coil but if yours has the original single terminal coil, you’ll either have to break into the armored cable for connection or use wiring kit VHE106 to bypass it. Full instructions included.

Crane®  Ignition
With the Crane® breakerless ignition system, you’ll get top performance and mileage without the gradual decline caused by a worn distributor. You never have to reset your points again! On the Crane system, triggering is done by an infrared LED and chopper wheel. This completely eliminates the timing and dwell variation found in breaker point distributors and is less susceptible to shaft wobble common in older, worn distributors. The Crane system has its own voltage regulator, is accurate to 1/100 of one degree and each electronic component is used at only 40% of its capacity for an extra margin of reliability. For all 12 volt, 4 cylinder models prior to 1975.
