Correcting Offset
By: Cameron Daline

If you own a 200, 700 or 900 series car made between 1975 and 1995 you may have noticed that pickings are pretty slim for aftermarket wheels compared to other cars. The reason for this is the somewhat unique bolt pattern and offset combination that Volvo used on these cars. Wheels designed to work on these cars are a 5 x 108 bolt pattern with an offset somewhere around 20-25mm. Later front wheel and all wheel drive Volvos (850 models and newer) used this same bolt pattern, but with an offset in the neighborhood of 40mm. Although a bigger number, a 40mm positive offset wheel actually sits further inboard than the 20mm positive offset wheel. So what does this all mean? It means that we can drastically expand our wheel horizons for our rear wheel drive cars if we can push those later style wheels out about an inch to correct the offset. So how do we do this? The solution is wheel spacers. H&R has been specializing in suspension parts since the 1970s and we are happy to now carry their 25mm spacers specifically designed for rear wheel drive Volvos.

H&R spacers are hub centric and wheel centric allowing perfect centering of spacers and wheels. New studs are pressed into the spacers which means they are a direct bolt on – no new studs needed. Simply bolt the spacers onto your wheel’s hub with included lug nuts and then bolt your wheels onto the spacers with your existing lug nuts. Now we’ve effectively changed our offset by 25mm. That means your car can now accept wheels with the later style offset. So what wheels will fit your car now? Most any wheel that would fit a front wheel drive or all wheel drive Volvo! If you want to stick with an OEM look you can put stock Volvo alloy wheels from say an 850 or S60 to give your Volvo a different look. If you want something different you can fit something more extreme like our VST Monoblock wheels.

Due to the huge variety of factors that can come into play (wheel size, tire size, ride height, etc.) there may be additional modifications required. Depending on the wheel/tire combination you opt for you may have to “roll” your fenders. This simply refers to the process of rolling the metal edge on the inner wheel wells further up into the wheel arch. If you have a 200 series Volvo you’ll also need an additional set of lug nuts. Volvo 200 series cars use ½” right hand thread studs and Volvo 700/900 series Volvo use 12mm metric studs. H&R spacers are built with 12mm metric studs pressed into them. This means that you’ll need ½” right hand thread lug nuts (ipd part #87699) to attach the spacers to your hubs. You can then use the 12mm lug nuts supplied with H&R spacers to then attach your wheels to the spacers. A small price to pay for an expanded range of wheels to choose from for your favorite brick! As usual, you can always call one of our Customer Service Representatives for further information on fitting wheels on your Volvo.

H&R Spacers

If you’ve searched for wheels for your rear wheel drive Volvo you’ve likely found that there is a pretty limited selection of aftermarket wheels that will fit your Brick. The selection available for newer, front wheel drive and all wheel drive Volvos while still somewhat limited, is much larger. The bolt pattern on all Volvos from the early 70s until today is the same - 5x108. When Volvo changed to FWD they also changed the offset (how far inboard or outboard the wheel sits on the hub). The difference in offset is roughly 25mm. Adding 25mm spacers to your RWD Volvo will allow you to mount most front wheel drive Volvo wheels on your 200, 700, 900 series car.

When considering making this change there are many factors to consider. Modification to the wheel wells may still be necessary and offset can vary slightly depending on manufacturer and size. For further information on mounting FWD wheels on a RWD car please call us. Whether you want improved handling, increased safety or simply desire your car to make a statement about your individual style, TRAK+® Wheel Spacers can help you accomplish your goal. H&R DRM Series spacers bolt to the hub with existing wheel studs and special nuts (included). Wheel is bolted to new DRM wheel studs that are pressed into wheel spacers.
