NEW! ipd ECU Upgrade Videos
(with all new never before seen footage)
By: ECU Ugrade Team
Since we began offering performance ECU software upgrades for Turbocharged Volvos about 15 years ago, we have accumulated a vast amount of knowledge on the subject. It’s a large chunk of data and it can be a bit overwhelming to try and sift through it all in our catalogs, newsletters and website. The power of video has proven to be a very good way to communicate large amounts of information, especially on technical subjects like the ECU upgrading process.
Our software upgrade team put together a couple of videos this January to give you a better insight into the testing, development and upgrading process. Ken, Lucky, Chris and myself spent about a week producing the videos and are very happy with how they have turned out. If you have been considering an ECU upgrade for your Volvo or even if you have already upgraded, you will enjoy what we have put together and you might learn a thing or two!
Here’s just a few of the topics covered
- Wide Scope Tuning VS Dyno Tuning
- Flash Tuning VS Chip Replacement
- Upgrade options
- Is your Volvo healthy enough for an upgrade?
- The importance of Stage “0”
- When is a Stage upgrade required?

Short Ram Air Intake System
![]() |
SR5T - for all 850 S70, C70 and V70 93 - 2000
Engine compartment temps on today’s vehicles are higher than ever. With hood seals, belly pans, air guides, and tight fitting power trains, the engine compartment doesn’t have the same empty space and airflow it once did. Factor in the high flow coolant fans moving radiator heat through the engine compartment and you’ve got enough heat to slow cook a pot roast. Using ambient air for engine consumption just makes sense; colder air is denser and can be matched with more fuel, which results in more power. Unfortunately many of the ‘cold air intake’ kits available today are merely a tube with a high flow filter on the end. While this is a step in the right direction major considerations are being overlooked that would maximize the gain. The ipd SR5T intake system addresses these issues for optimal performance.
*Some 1996-1997 models had Secondary Air System (SAS) This filter is used in conjuction with our Short Ram Intake on vehicles that have SAS.
Click the part numbers to see photos that will help you determine whether your Volvo has SAS or not.
Aquamist Intercooling!

The Aquamist system operates at over 100 psi of pressure and emits a fog of water into the combustion chamber during boost conditions. The fog is converted into steam and huge amounts of heat energy are absorbed, dramatically reducing cylinder temps for increased power.
We’ve used Aquamist systems on several of our high output turbo projects with excellent results. Typically an Aquamist system will allow your engine management to maintain full ignition advance at full load. This system is especially effective on the 2004 to 2007 R models as the stock intercooler system is inadequate when ambient exceeds 80 deg F. It is also an add on to our new stage III kit for 1994-2000 turbo models.
The main function of these systems is to suppress detonation caused by high temperature and pressure developed within the combustion chamber when the effective compression ratio has been taken beyond the auto-ignition point by a turbo (high boost). Water, with its high thermal transfer efficiency, is extremely effective for controlling not only the onset of detonation but also the production of oxides of nitrogen in modern leanburn engines like Volvos. Aquamist products are designed with great care to ensure each system meets the highest standards of both electronic and mechanical reliability. We stock the 1-S water injection system and the DDS3 monitoring system, which is all you’ll need for most Volvo installs including excellent instructions. We can supply the full range by special order. Allow 2-4 hours for typical installation time. To learn more about Aquamist, please visit their very informative website at Aquamist.co.uk
Reverse Intercooler Piping Kit
![]() |
Now in Polished Aluminum
ipd’s reverse intercooler piping kit (R.I.P. kit) reverses the routing of the induction tubing in turbo charged Volvo’s from 1995-1998. ipd’s kit routes the hot turbo air to the top of the intercooler and routes the cool air out the bottom. This change in routing reduces the heat that is inducted into the intercooler outlet air. Since heat rises, routing the air out the bottom of the intercooler reduces outlet temperature an average 12 degrees Centigrade when measured at the throttle body inlet. The ipd R.I.P. kit design is also 14 inches shorter than factory induction routing which results in increased throttle response and less boost lag. Made from only two brushed aluminum tubing pieces and 5 silicone connectors, the ipd kit is the easiest on market to install. Get the most from your turbo Volvo with the ipd reverse intercooler piping kit.
