Timing Belts and Kits

Timing belt maintenance has never been so important since the 5 cylinder ‘white’ engine was introduced into the US in 1993. Unlike the ‘red’ engine of days gone past, these new engines are interference so a broken timing belt means valve and piston damage, an expensive alternative to belt replacement. Intervals for replacement vary from 50K to 105K depending on model year. Some kits include the belt with a DVD instructional that includes complete removal and installation procedure. With our available cam locking tool for 1993-1998 models, perfect alignment on these models can be ensured and no more potential for the camshaft to "jump" while the belt is off. This job used to intimidate even the most skilled individuals, but with ipd helping you out, timing belt maintenance is back in your control. Timing belt kits complete with tensioner, tensioner pulley, idler pulley and belt.

Serpentine Accessory Belts and Tools

You may not know it, but the charging system, power steering and air conditioning in your Volvo are all driven by a single serpentine accessory belt. These belts have proven to be pretty reliable, but it is not something you’d find at Joe’s discount auto parts. We recommend keeping a spare in the trunk along with the required installation tool, available below. Volvo recommends that the belt be replaced every 2 years or 20,000 miles. Don’t be stranded by a an inexpensive belt!

Ignition Coils

Volvo introduced direct fire over the plug ignition coils in 1999 on most models. It's a nice design that eliminates spark plug wires and the distributor cap etc, however they have proven to be a bit problematic and prone to failure as they age, primarily due to the harsh high heat environment that tends to bake them over time.

Average life span is around 100,000 miles before minor mis-firing can begin, however it is possible to induce failure in as little as 20-30,000 miles in high load / hi boost conditions. MAin symptom is light misfire that you might not even notice due to eh powerful engine management system, however it will soon deteriorate into a condition that will set a check engine light for misfires. You should always replace all the coils whenever one goes bad as it has been our experience that when they are getting up there in age, the others will soon follow and you'll save installation labor and possible further issues by replacing them a s a set. You should also replace the spark plugs whenever the coils are replaced as worn plugs are a common cause of premature coil failure. Excessive plug gaps (worn plugs) put extreme loads on the coils and causes them to overheat internally and leads to winding failure.

Stock Replacement Ignition Coil

Since 1999 Volvo has utilized a one ignition coil per cylinder ignition system. These coils have shown a rather high failure rate and tend to require replacement almost as though they were a maintenance item! If you’re suffering from poor starting, hesitation when accelerating or even poor fuel economy, weak ignition coils could be the problem.
