We used to think it was sort of an industry gimmick to prop up sluggish sales during the fall and winter months, however we have come to appreciate the annual reminder to get our Volvos in shape for the coming winter weather. Ipd staffer Cameron Daline has written up an excellent guide outlining what you can do to prep your Volvo for winter weather. A clean detailed car helps keep your attention on the road and in the process you may uncover other areas that need attention. We feel that preparing for inclement weather also improves the safety level for you and you passengers as being prepared is one way to avoid unplanned for emergencies. In this issue, check out Matthew Blairs custom outfitted 2000 XC 70 affectionately named Gertrude Grylls. We also have a few tech tips to help you get your Volvo prepared for winter and  get more life out of your transmission. When most of us think of tuning up our cars we think about the basics. Plugs, cap, rotor and maybe wires and filters. Done, right? Well, that depends on your definition of done. There are many parts in our Volvos that need to be serviced. Some come up frequently like oil changes and some span a much larger mileage interval like differential fluid changes and timing belt jobs. In the larger scheme of things they are all important and all need to be done in the manner recommended by Volvo. While Volvos are rugged and tough, they will wear out eventually but proper servicing and maintenance of ALL the parts on the car will do wonders for the long term health of your Volvo. This issue we are focusing on components to help improve the fuel efficiency of your RWD Volvo. From low-resistance spark plug wires and free flowing air filters, to complete engine tune up kits, IPD has all the parts you need to keep your Volvo on the road. Did you know, that most RWD Volvos with manual transmissions can achieve the same or better fuel economy as most brand new cars available today? This issue we are focusing on some of the items which often get overlooked on your Volvo including ignition system components and lighting and lenses. Since the start of the 850 model, Volvo has utilized very high output ignition systems to help combat the increased cylinder pressures found in the turbo model engines. This is great news for you and me, however the ignition system components really take a beating and need to be replaced more often than on most of the older Volvo models. In this issue we talk about some Spark Plug Folklore, and shed some light on choosing the right plugs for your engine. With the price of fuel continuing to rise, making sure that your ignition system is functioning at maximum capacity becomes ever more important for ultimate efficiency.

About 15 years ago Volvo entered a new era with the introduction of its turbocharged, 222hp 5 cylinder 850 models. Shortly thereafter IPD started offering performance ECU software upgrades for them. Since that time, ECU upgrades on turbo Volvos have become one of our most popular upgrades. The topic of fuel efficiency is not very far from anyone's mind these days, even with our vintage bricks. At ipd we lean toward the performance end of the scale but that doesn't always mean less efficiency.
