2013 Photo Contest

AND THE WINNERS ARE...
There was some stiff competition to decide the winners for this years Photo Contest. In fact, we’re kinda glad we didn’t have to make these decisions on our own and are thankful to all those who participated. You’ve made some Volvo owners very very very happy.
The grand prize winner won a $300 ipd gift certificate while each winner for Front Wheel/All Wheel Drive, Rear Wheel Drive and Vintage all won $50 ipd gift certificates.
Grand Prize - Overall Winner - Adam Peterson
Front Wheel/All Wheel Drive Category Winner - Testuya Ozeki
Rear Wheel Drive Category Winner - Thomas Blangiardo
Vintage Category Winner - Adam Nonis
We've sifted through all the entries for this years photo contest and whittled them down to what we feel is the best of the best. Every year our annual photo contest generates some great pictures from the Volvo community. It's becoming increasingly difficult to decide a winner so we're bringing back the responsibility of deciding a winner to you. We wanted to thank all those that submitted photos for this years contest. We hope you don't take this too seriously and enjoy seeing the simple beauty of these Swedish models.
Voting will be done by the public. Only one vote per category will be accepted. Photo with the most overall votes will win the grand prize with the next photo for each category winning the prize for their respective category. Votes will be accepted through Sunday June 16, 2013.
Thanks for participating!
We received some great entries for our Vintage models.
Check out all of our entries from our Rear Wheel Drive models.
We had some amazing entries for our Front Wheel/All Wheel Drive category.
If there’s one thing we love more than driving our Volvos, it’s showing them off.
Our annual photo contest is one of the most popular events each year and for good reason. The chance to win $300 in ipd cash is a big motivator. We’ve changed the timing this year and moved the contest to the Spring in the hopes that it provides people more of an opportunity to get some great shots of your car. So dig into the closet, dust off the old polaroid and take those beauty shots of your pride and joy.
By sending in your Volvo photo, you’ll get a crack at a $300 gift certificate you can use toward any ipd parts or accessories.
As we did last year, the winners will be decided by you, the Volvo community. We will bear the burden of sifting through the pile and narrowing down the best of the submissions and leaving the rest up to you. We will spare you the pain of looking at low res/blurry camera phone submissions, links to Photobucket files, pics of Volvos in driveways and next to Toyota Camrys. All of which happened last year so please, please, I beg you, don't send me photos like these again. It's painful. Seriously, my stomach is churning just thinking about it. I've included a few tips to give you the upper hand.
- Be creative.
- Make the focal point of the photo be the Volvo and not the mountains or scenery behind it.
- Do not take pictures of your car in your driveway after you just finished washing it.
- Although there are exceptions, avoid having people in the photo. Most of us aren't as attractive as we think we are.
- Avoid other car makes being in the photo. It's a bit tacky to have a photo of your 850 with a Ford Explorer sitting right next to it.
- Resolution! Make your photos large enough for us to use on the cover of our catalog if we wanted to. See my tech tip below.
- Other than that, have fun and again, be creative. Take a cover worthy photo. Good luck!
Watch out because here come the details.
By submitting a photo, you release the rights and allow us to use your name and photo in any way that ipd chooses. There will be one winner in each of 3 categories (Vintage, Rear Wheel Drive, Front/All Wheel Drive) and a single “best of show” winner that will take the grand prize!
Only 2 photos per person will be accepted. If you send me links to photobucket sites or forums etc. it will be impossible to enter your car in the contest so choose the 2 photos that you think have the best shot and send those in.
Entries must be received no later than May 1, 2013. There will be no extensions or exceptions.

Tech Tip - It’s all About the Pixels
By: Bryan Cottrell - ipd marketing manager and graphic designer
Digital photography has been around a while now and if you haven’t made the switch to a digital camera then it’s almost a guarantee that you will eventually. In this day and age, digital photography is getting more and more popular due to the ease of use and the quality of the images that camera technology has evolved to. A cameras quality is generally based on the amount of information that can be contained with one click of the button.
Pixels are dots used to display an image on a screen or printed material. Camera manufacturers use the term megapixels to describe the resolution of the total number of pixels that any particular image can hold. In most computer contexts, resolution is given as two dimensions, such as in a computer display resolution of 1600 x 1200, which represents a width of 1600 pixels and a height of 1200 pixels. Digital camera manufacturers take the sum total of pixels generated by multiplying the two dimensions, so that a camera capable of producing images at 1600 x 1200 would produce a total of 1,920,000 pixels, or 1.9 megapixels. Even if photos look perfect on the computer screen, different rules apply when printing in a catalog or newsletter. The reason why is that computer monitors don’t require as many pixels as the printed page so when your getting ready to submit your winning photo contest entry be sure to set the camera on the highest setting possible so we can be sure to print them in our upcoming publications. Good luck and I look forward to seeing what you’ve got.
Please submit photos in the highest resolution you can. Computer screen resolutions (800x600, 1024x768, etc) are too small for printing purposes.

Wednesday, May 29, 2013 - KEELY VARADA
Aww not everyone who submitted photos were showcased in the video of "all the entries"?
Wednesday, May 29, 2013 - BRYAN COTTRELL
We're getting a few comments that some peoples submissions didn't get into the video for the various categories. There may be a few reasons for this. We either didn't get the submission or the video didn't compile all the submissions for that category for some reason. It was meant to give you an idea of the kind of submissions we received and wasn't meant to be all inclusive. We appreciate all those who participated in this fun annual contest. Happy voting! - Bryan

This was my first time voting on photos and man, it was very difficult. So many great photos with such excellent cars. I applaud all of you. it took me almost an hour to decide and I still wish I could have voted on at least two per category. Good luck to all who entered I can't wait to see who wins!!

Thanks for the opportunity to be part of this contest! The vintage was the tough choice. As for the FWD/AWD, not so hard. As I own a 2007 S60R...

Volvo's are great cars, I have had 4 (four) 740's a 1987, 1988, 1989 and 1990. All with 250,000 miles plus. The submitted pictures are, at best, average. I wish we had a better selection to choose from. I don't take photos of my Volvo, I drive it.

If you didn't mean for it to be all inclusive then don't say all entries. Some of those that made it in the video aren't even in focus, some of them are downright awful. I'm guessing no one edited your videos, and if they did they should be let go.

Who has two thumbs and (I'm guessing) high blood pressure? The guy above me. Relax for 's sake. Most of us get it, iPd! Keep up the good work!
