HOWTO: Reset Service Reminder Indicator on 1998-2009 Volvos

Tuesday, August 25, 2009

Some 1998 and older models require a OBDII service light reset tool.  You can probably have it reset for a marginal cost by a local Volvo dealership or Volvo specialty shop that has one of these tools.

1998 Volvo S80 Models

  • Turn ignition switch to position I
  • Press and hold the odometer reset button
  • Turn ignition switch to position II
  • After Service light flashes, release odometer reset button
  • Turn ignition off
  • Turn ignition back on to confirm reset

1999-2000 Volvo S70 / V70 / C70 Models

  • Insert key in to ignition but don't turn it yet
  • Press and Hold the odometer trip counter reset button
  • Turn ignition switch to "run" position (Position II)
  • After Service light flashes, release odometer reset button
  • Turn ignition off
  • Turn ignition back on to confirm reset

1999-2000 Volvo S80 Models

  • Insert key and turn ignition switch to position I
  • Press and hold odometer trip counter reset button
  • Turn ignition switch to position II
  • Continue holding odometer trip counter reset button for about 10 seconds
  • After Service light flashes, release odometer reset button
  • Should hear "beep-beep" to confirm command accepted

2001 Volvo S80 / V70 / S60 Models (May apply to S40/V40 also)

  • The service reminder indicator lamp illuminates for 120 seconds when the ignition is first switched on.
  • Insert key and turn Ignition Switch to position I
  • Press and hold in the reset button for the trip odometer
  • Turn the Ignition switch to position II (within 5 seconds)
  • The service reminder indicator starts flashing when the reset button for the trip odometer has been pressed for 10 seconds
  • Release the reset button for the trip odometer within 5 seconds. The instrument gives an audible signal when resetting has succeeded.
  • If the trip meter reset button is not released within 5 seconds the indicator is not reset, but the indicator will stop flashing.

2002-2007 All Volvo Models

  •
  • The service reminder indicator lamp illuminates for 120 seconds when the ignition is first switched on
  • Insert key and turn Ignition Switch to position I
  • Press and hold in the reset button for the trip odometer
  • Turn the Ignition switch to position II (within 2 seconds)
  • Hold the reset button for the trip meter pressed in until the original trip counter value blinks and is redisplayed
(For all vehicles 2003- a general yellow lamp will light when the reset button must be released.)
  • Release the reset button for the trip odometer within 4 seconds. The instrument gives an audible signal when resetting has succeeded
  • If the trip meter is already reset the reset button should be held in for a minimum of 10 seconds and a maximum of 14 seconds.
  • If the reset button for the trip odometer is not released within 4 seconds, the service reminder indicator (SRI) is not reset.

2008-2009 Volvos with starter push button on dashboard

  • The trip odometer must have at least 0.1 mile on it or the light will not reset.
  • Get in vehicle and do not push down on the brake pedal
  • Put the key in the slot and push the starter button once
  • Press and hold down the odometer reset button
  • While doing this, push the starter button again and hold for 2 seconds
  • Keep the odometer reset button held in and watch the instrument cluster for the general warning indicator (I) to illuminate. When this happens, release the button.
  • Turn the vehicle off then back on and verify the message is now out.

Just got back into Volvos with an '08 S80. Had an '01 for years. I was reading that VIDA was required to reset the "General Maintenance Required" light and totally bummed about having to go to the dealer for this. You guys saved the day, got the light off and working on my parts order now. Thanks

How about those of us who change our oil before the recommended interval? How are we to reset the service reminder interval ("2002-2007 All Volvo Models") if the service reminder indicator lamp isn't on?

went to Jiffy Lube for my 2008 XC70 and they couldn't turn the service indicator llght off....I searched the internet and tried many recommendations that didn't work. Finally I came across this and it worked! Yeah, power to the people and women who dislike rip-off dealers....

I not believe the string addresses the S60 R with the reset button located on the turn signal stalk. Any ideas?

I have to admit, when Jiffy Lube said they couldn't figure it out I thought I was doomed to pay the dealer some stupid fee for resetting the system. I didn't trust all dealing with the trip odometer to reset something like this.....but it worked! Thanks for the great information!

My daughter has a 98 S70 and following the directions above for S80. The Service light never flashes. Her ODB II reader shows no codes. Any suggestions? Where can we get a tool if that is required?

I keep typing in 1998 S70 and all that comes up for a fix on the service light reset is 1999 and higher. Anyone know how to reset the light on a 1998? Email me at higgsauto@yahoo.com

Thanks for the tip on reseting the service light. I took me three trys but it worked. As with the older cars timing is critical on holding down the buttons. On my 2008 S 80 as soon as I pressed the starter buttton for 2 seconds the "I" light came on and I got four beeps. At the end of the fourth beep I released the odometer reset button

2004 Volvo V40 uses the procedure for the 2001 Volvo S80 / V70 / S60 Models to reset the service indicator.
