Upper Engine Stabilizer Mount

Upper Engine Stabilizer Mount

The original rubber engine stabilizer mount has proven to be a weak link that that can fail prematurely and allow the engine to rock and move during acceleration and braking, significantly affecting the handling and performance of the car. This mount is located near the top of the engine on the backside just to the right of center, connecting the engine to the firewall. The original mount requires a special Volvo press tool for removal and installation.

Our improved polyurethane material is stronger (we warranty it for life) and the 2 piece design allows for easy installation without special tools. The original mount is covered under the basic Volvo warranty, however we have heard from customers that have had the original rubber mount replaced several times. To inspect your mount, look for signs of the rubber separating where it is attached to the outer housing. The original rubber bushing can be removed and our HD replacement can be installed in about 30 minutes with common hand tools and included instructions.

Most 2005 models and all 2006-2007 models with 5 cylinder engines use a square style upper engine mount. If you have the sqaure style mount and would like to upgrade to the ipd heavy duty mount you need ipd part #2B1885. This kit includes our HD poly mount with round mounting bracket assembly. Please note that some of the 2001-2004 models will also have the square mount if the mount has recently been replaced under warranty or a new mount was purchased from you Volvo dealer. Recently, the round style was superseded to the square style by Volvo

Please note! These polyurethane bushings are firmer than the stock rubber parts they replace and can transmit additional vibration in some cases. Especially if the motor mounts and or transmission mounts are worn. When you replace the worn out rubber mount, now much of the load is supported by the new stiffer bushing and this can often lead to unwanted vibration, especially at idle on models equipped with automatic transmissions. It’s important to make sure that your other mounts are in good condition to avoid unwanted vibration.

*Many cars have been retrofitted with the later square style bushing by Volvo under warranty. Please inspect your car before purchasing to ensure correct fit.

Please check fitment listed below to ensure products will fit your specific vehicle. Some products may include or exclude some model years or engine and transmission combinations. The products listed on our website are for Volvos sold in the North American market. Many of the parts are exactly the same as those used in other markets, however we cannot guarantee fitment for those markets.

This is must for anybody who wants to add more response to their car. As soon as you tap the gas, the response is instant. No more lag or sluggish start from a stop. This, combined with the upgraded IPD torque mount, makes an amazing difference on the power transfer to the wheels.

One warning; at first, the vibration is overwhelming, but it does significantly get better after 1000 miles or so as stated in the other review. I would say it's decreased by at least 50%, if not more, so don't be worried when you first install it. It will be a little much at first, but it definitely improves, and you'll be grateful you did it in the long run.

Excellent product!

My original upper engine mount in my 1999 v70 Automatic had failed resulting in clunky shifts and poor throttle response.

Now that I have replaced with your polyurethane version, the shifts are smooth as can be!

I was skeptical at first to purchase because of the reviews about vibration however, even at IDLE there is LESS vibration than before, despite what others had said. I cannot even feel the shift from park to reverse and then to drive...amazing!

EXCELLENT PRODUCT!!!

EASY 15 MINUTE INSTALL!

Time and time again IPD has the right part at the right price! good on ya guys!

OK, I'm going to post this twice, since I really think this is a review of two parts: the Poly upper motor mount bushing and the strut bar bushings.

On my 95 850, no strut bar, the upper mount was bolted directly to the firewall. Back then, just changing the upper mount bushing was a HUUUGE improvement.

For all you R owners (and anyone else who has the same strut bar) the upper mount is attached to the BAR, not the firewall. So, common sense says while you have the strut bar off to change the upper mount bushing, you might as well add the strut bar bushings. It adds a whopping 3.5 minutes to the job (and a minute of that is spent opening the ziploc bag and taking pictures ;)).

Not only that, but my upper mount bushing was completely torn through top and bottom. Given how much the strut bar flexes, I cant imagine the stresses that the engine exerted on that mount and, subsequently, the strut bar, in order to shear something that was so flexible to begin with. My strut bar rotated several degrees, and i could "bottom" out the bolts just by twisting with my bare hands. In other words, the stock bar bushings were doing NOTHING.

PROs: Fast forward to the completed job. I could BARELY twist the strut bar by hand with the poly bushings. And forget about the upper mount- it just LOOKS cooler and is obviously a better design. I took her for a drive, and I couldnt BELIEVE the difference. The car turned MUCH flatter at speed, and in fact, I gained a little oversteer in tight, fast turns (or, perhaps I was just so used to understeer!).

Cons: Not really a con for me, but maybe for some. I have the 6mt, and with clutch depressed at a stoplight, RPMs below 1000, i can feel the motor through the steering wheel and in my seat. Not outrageous, but its there. above 1000 and she smooths right out (i also have the blue lower tranny mount but so that could be contributing as well). But in all honesty, I didnt buy the R for a waterbed-like ride, thats what my Lincoln is for. These parts give you what you want out of a sport coupe- the feeling that you're steering the car by dragging your hands on the road itself...

Summary: Again, if you have to buy one, buy the other! You wont be sorry!

Well done once again IPD!

Product installed very easily compared to OEM replacement. Performs well; very satisfying. Definitely stiffer than factory part, decreased wheel hop and increased power to the ground when the transmission kicks down. Thanks!

This completely changes the driving experience of the my 01 XC70 from slow engine
response to near instant response driving around town. The bushing does increase
vibration at idle, but after 1000 miles it has decreased significantly. To decrease
vibration tighten the mount bolt with engine on and car in drive, this made a huge
difference in the vibration level. This upgrade is for anyone wanting a better driving
experience from their XC who doesn't mind a small amount of extra vibration!

Before I purchased the upper engine torque mount I spent time reading all of the customer reviews. I must say that all of the complaints about vibration this and that. Well I have not had one instance of any abnormal vibration. I feel the mount helps alot with the engine movement from my turbo beast. My car is a rocket from 60-80mph. The car feels so smooth now, it truly feels like a whole new car on a straight line. i.e the highway. This was the first product I have purchased from ipd and I will continue to review and read all of the customer reviews they help. So in the end I can give my business to ipd for all 3 of my Volvos. Impressed so far!!!

Installation is obviously easy so long as you have a round mount handy (check out the
junkyard for a cheap find).

At first vibration was very bad and unbearable. But after about a month the bushing
had worn in a bit and settled and vibration is great. Comparable to the amount added
by switching the lower transmission mount. Transmission shifting has gotten even
smoother, engine performance change not noticeable. But my old mount was busted
so why not upgrade?

I'm not a big fan of the poly bushings. I have a lot of vibration when idling. I'm going to change back to the factory bushings. They're easy enough to change periodically and not worth the vibration annoyances.
