Cam Locking Tool

Cam Locking Tool

Misalignment of the cam shafts during a timing belt replacement in the 5 and 6 cylinder engines can be a costly mistake. Our cam locking tool holds the camshafts in place during timing belt replacement to prevent unexpected movement and ensure proper cam shaft alignment. Made from 3/8 inch anodized aluminum plate with 3/16 inch dowel pins spaced for placement in between the intake and exhaust cam gears.

Please check fitment listed below to ensure products will fit your specific vehicle. Some products may include or exclude some model years or engine and transmission combinations. The products listed on our website are for Volvos sold in the North American market. Many of the parts are exactly the same as those used in other markets, however we cannot guarantee fitment for those markets.

Seems to be some variation amongst users on how it performs. Some engage three
teeth, some engage four teeth. I agree that it locks in solid, maybe that wasn't a good
thing for me and it took a lot of effort to press it in place once I got my timing lined up
on the cover and the crankshaft. Teeth never moved after I took the old belt off but
when I attempted to put the new belt on I could not get the belt to engage the intake
cam teeth correctly from the crankshaft. Just a little too much slack. Ended up taking
the locking tool off and rotating my intake cam a hair clockwise to engage the teeth
correctly and with tightness. Had to rotate the exhaust cam counterclockwise just a
hair to achieve same tightness. Don't know what happened? Old belt stretched? New
belt can't match teeth pattern? I loved the idea of a cam locking tool but it didn't
really help me much.

Used this tool this weekend on my 850. At first I did not think it would do the job. After struggling in the confined space of the engine compartment, I was happy to have the assurance that I had not moved the camshafts. The fit is close and all four pins engage. It can be knocked out if you are not careful. I will be using this tool on my S70.

This tool is cheap insurance to ensure that nothing moves that isn't supposed to when replacing a timing belt.

One note for the first time user: I found it necessary to experiment around a bit to determine which pins to position in the appropriate sprockets of the gears. Once it was positioned, though, it was obvious it was in the right piece. The tool inserted with a fair amount of friction...no "slop" at all. Also, I initially assumed that all four pins would engage with the cam gears. As it turned out, there were only 3 of the 4 pins that were engaged with the gears....not all 4.
