Volvo C70 1998-2005 » Short Ram Intake

Engine compartment temperatures on today’s’ vehicles are higher than ever. With hood seals, belly pans, air guides, and tight fitting power trains, the engine compartment doesn’t have the same empty space and airflow it once did. Factor in the high flow coolant fans moving radiator heat through the engine compartment and you’ve got enough heat to slow cook a pot roast. Using ambient air for engine consumption just makes sense; colder air is denser and can be matched with more fuel, which results in more power. Unfortunately many of the ‘cold air intake’ kits available today are merely a tube with a high flow filter on the end. While this is a step in the right direction major considerations are being overlooked that would maximize the gain.

I started with my 850 and relocated the exterior temp sensor into my factory air box to do some baseline testing. Come to find out that air box temps would frequently exceed 120F even on a 80F ambient day. At speed the air box temps dropped to within 5F of ambient and after running (even at idle) for 5 or so minutes air box temps would drop to approx that same level. Running the new Ipd short ram intake I was able to keep airbox temps to within 2F of ambient although I still got high hot start temps just like with factory. The real benefit in a short ram intake is due to the more open element design of the filter and better breathing. Boost came in approx 400 RPM sooner and the dyno chart showed better power curve as the turbo spooled. This intake also shields the ignition coil from high under hood temps as well so using the ipd performance coil kit means better power and increased longevity! -Lucky Arnold

Some 1998 models had a Secondary Air System (SAS) used to reduce emissions.  The SAS system normally draws it's air supply from the factory air filter box.  Since our Short Ram Intake replaces the factory air box, these models will need an additional filter for SAS.  See the image on the right to determine if your vehicle has SAS.

Just installed the intake on my 2001 C70. Install was easy, and it sounds great. The sound is exactly what I expected, nice wirrr and a great gasp from the blowoff valve. I highly recommend it.

The installation went pretty smoothly. I have a 850 GLT and the only issue was that
the plug (turbo control valve?) that gets mounted to the lower part of the box near the
engine required me to pull the wires out of the factory loom to get them to reach. It
all worked out and everything is fine, just took a little head scratching.
I don't notice much noise difference in the car which is fine. I do notice the engine
seems smoother and it looks sick.

I put this on my 95 850 turbo. it is the only thing i have done so far and the turbo spooling up is much louder with the intake. also when letting off the throttle hard at anything higher than 2300rpm sounds awesome. i just wish it was stick!!

Installed it today 5 seconds after i got home from work. Took a little time cause i dont have tiny fingers but went smooth enough i cant complain. CAUTION SHARP! kinda like dont run with scissors. Nice noise good pick up. Stock + Intake and still sounds nice an pulls strong. In todays world its spool or get spooled. Thanks iPD

Do yourself a favor and learn from my mistake; BUY THIS INTAKE! I fell for the "bargain" intake and understood at once why the IPD unit costs more as soon as my cooling fans kicked on. Any benefit gained from lower restriction was offset by the massive heat-soak from the cooling fans. The age-old cliche' holds true; you DO get what you pay for. The IPD unit is a well-engineered piece and unquestionably worth the extra money. Now if they could just lower the price on the RIP!!

Easily self-installed in my 2000 xc70. Much more of a whistle when the turbo spools up and a slight sense of power increase overall. Looks good under the hood.

I had a little trouble with the install, electrical connections for my TCV wouldn't allow it to mount where directed and the air induction pipe wouldn't fit in the opening, so a groove had to be cut in the bottom of the pipe to get it to enter the heat sheild. Overall though this intake looks so sharp under the hood housing my MSD coil. A nice mean growl is noticed under WOT. It's for sure a fact that this intake takes alot of stress out of how hard the engine/turbo has to work to get air.

One thing to think about would be the allen bolts and nuts that secure the sheild to the engine bay. It's such a tight fit it took some swearing to get the nut started. I had the same trouble getting the nuts to start on the bolt with the MSD coil bracket as well.

Let me start by saying that I extremely pleased with this product installed on my 1998 C70 T5 MT Coupe! Not just how it makes the engine bay look that much cooler, but also in the sound in produces when accelerating and when lifting off the throttle, brings a new wow factor when making trips to anywhere! I should mention that I have an upgraded exhaust and ECU but standard downpipe and turbo but from what I can tell, the car picks up slightly faster at a few hundred rpm lower. Its not a mind blowing difference and I guess that it could all be in my head, but I guess that's all that counts right? The added thrill makes it all worth it.

A few notes:

- The space for the turbo valve control is in a place which required replacing the valve tubing with a longer one to make it fit but I've been told this has already been fixed

- The heat shield is not polished but brushed, which I prefer anyway

- The edges of the heat shield seem unnecessarily sharp and it can be quite a tight fit but it does in the end and the entire installation is really just a matter of some patience.

I just bought the short ram kit for my 99 v70xc, but because I am a moron and didn’t read the application’s that it fits I didn’t work, so a little frustrated I called IPD, they said bring it back and they would refund me the money, even though it was my fault. When I got there instead of just giving me my money back and sending me out the door, They spent almost an hour helping me piece together a kit that would work, also explaining to me what the difference’s are. It looks and sounds awesome, that alone is worth the price. So thanks guys.

ipd customer service response: We will soon be offering a Short Ram kit for 1999-2000 models. There are differences in the MAF sensor diameter between pre-1998 and 1999-2000.

I have a 1998 S70 glt, and in all honesty, i dont feel much of a difference in my car after installing the short Ram intake. It seems to me that this product is a bit over rated.

ipd customer service response: During our testing we found that the SR5T had gains most noticeable in vehicles with a both an exhaust and ECU upgrade, and really shines in vehicles with upgraded turbos like our Ipd Stage III kit. Stock vehicles tended to benefit at a higher RPM point which can make it less obvious to subjective testing like typical road driving.
The Motronic ECU has the ability to adjust and adapt to changing engine conditions, ignition timing has a particularly bit role in this respect and you may find the vehicle runs stronger after a day or so of driving once the ECU adjusts. Lastly, low pressure turbo models vs. high pressure turbo models will benefit accordingly to their boost level with the later being the more noticeable of the two.
