Volvo C70 1998-2005 » Brake Pads Front
Volvos are fitted with decent brake systems. The primary complaint we hear is "way too much dust! How can I stop it?" We offer PBR and Mintex premium pads for great pedal response with much less dust and squeal. In our opinion these pads provide the best all around performance and safety. With good low temp bite, decent fade resistance, almost no dust, squeal free operation in most cases and a service life that is typically double that of the OEM pads, they are hard to beat. Please check fitment listed below to ensure products will fit your specific vehicle. Some products may include or exclude some model years or engine and transmission combinations.

So as everything in life, opinions vary but I found PBR pads are one of the best additions to your car. They have good initial bite and exceptional life and I have very little dust. Pads were installed on new rotors and when rotors were used up and replaced the same pads were used after sanding them smooth again (not recommended).
The S40 eats rear pads and the PBR organics will be the replacement.

I put these on my '98 S70 T5 with the Powerslot rotors. They are NOTICEABLY noisier than semi-metallics, and the amount of brake dust is absurd. Wheels are dirty within 2-3 days after getting them cleaned.
However, these brake hold up amazingly in use. No fade or noticeable give even when you are running them hot as hell.
I would not recommend these as an upgrade for daily drivers or even occasional fast drivers. You will not require the heat resistance that these offer, and the noise and dust is simply too much for those. Track car or constant hard riding/braking is more the requirement for these.
ipd customer service response: - Deluxe (organic) pads offer better stopping power for normal drivers but can fade under extreme conditions. Deluxe pads create a fair amount of dust. Deluxe compounds are less likely to squeal than other materials.
- Metallic pads offer less dust and less fade under extreme conditions, but need increased pedal effort until they have warmed up. They also have a tendency to squeal.
- Ceramic compounds are really for racing applications. Ceramic pads require increase pedal effort and create more dust, but offer superior fade resistance under extreme conditions.

Great - use them with power slot rotors.

So I bought PBR's deluxe front and rear pads for my 99 C70 almost a year ago. Stopping-wise they're actually pretty good. But as for IPD recommending them for their lack of dust and squealing is ridiculous. These are the most embarassing brake pads I've ever owned because they are so loud. They are quiet only for 1-2 days after I wash the car. Too bad I can't get my money back. Buyer Beware! Just stick with OEM.
ipd customer service response: Rotors need to be replaced or machined at the time of pad replacement or squealing will occur. Some applications also have shims to help reduce noise. Organic compounds (deluxe) tend to squeal less than metalic or ceramic compounds.
