Short Ram Intake Engine compartment temperatures on today’s’ vehicles are higher than ever. With hood seals, belly pans, air guides, and tight fitting power trains, the engine compartment doesn’t have the same empty space and airflow it once did. Factor in the high flow coolant fans moving radiator heat through the engine compartment and you’ve got enough heat to slow cook a pot roast. Using ambient air for engine consumption just makes sense; colder air is denser and can be matched with more fuel, which results in more power. Unfortunately many of the ‘cold air intake’ kits available today are merely a tube with a high flow filter on the end. While this is a step in the right direction major considerations are being overlooked that would maximize the gain.
I started with my 850 and relocated the exterior temp sensor into my factory air box to do some baseline testing. Come to find out that air box temps would frequently exceed 120F even on a 80F ambient day. At speed the air box temps dropped to within 5F of ambient and after running (even at idle) for 5 or so minutes air box temps would drop to approx that same level. Running the new Ipd short ram intake I was able to keep airbox temps to within 2F of ambient although I still got high hot start temps just like with factory. The real benefit in a short ram intake is due to the more open element design of the filter and better breathing. Boost came in approx 400 RPM sooner and the dyno chart showed better power curve as the turbo spooled. This intake also shields the ignition coil from high under hood temps as well so using the ipd performance coil kit means better power and increased longevity! -Lucky Arnold
Some 1998 models had a Secondary Air System (SAS) used to reduce emissions. The SAS system normally draws it's air supply from the factory air filter box. Since our Short Ram Intake replaces the factory air box, these models will need an additional filter for SAS. See the image on the right to determine if your vehicle has SAS. Please check fitment listed below to ensure products will fit your specific vehicle. Some products may include or exclude some model years or engine and transmission combinations.
We offer some products with multiple brand options. Products ending with an "E" suffix indicate Economy (non-OE) brands.

Short Ram Intake it's a great addition to my Volvo S70 GLT. It looks great, it sounds amazing... engine feels snappier. Installation was a blast, however lock of TCV hose gave me a bit problem. The product it self it's superb! Thanks IPD

The only tricky bit was installing the anchor to the frame, other then that very simple installation. Great intake note and quicker spooling. I can run my car hard for 50 miles pop the hood and touch the heat shield and filter element and they are significantly cooler then the engine compartment.

Can this be installed on a non turbo model?
ipd customer service response: This intake will not fit the non-turbo models.

Some years ago, I did an ECU reflash and Sport Muffler upgrade. The results were more than satisfactory. Double the boost, pleasant exhaust note, great pull through the gears, and a reported HP increase from stock 236 to 285. The best fun is having what appears to be a sedate blue Brick, but running neck and neck with the pimply “Fast & Furious” crowd at the Interstate on-ramp. They keep looking over at me, unable to understand how this nerdy Volvo station wagon is keeping up with them.
But … last week I completed a few additional “enhancements”. I installed the IPD Short Ram Intake, MSD Ignition Coil Upgrade, and Heavy Duty Turbo Control Valve. Words fail me. It is like I just cured my car of asthma and installed an adrenalin injection pump.
While the IPD descriptions of these upgrades are clear that they do not increase HP, I can say with some confidence that the existing HP now arrives much earlier at the party. No more waiting for 3000 RPM to see the boost gauge needle rise. To say that it is exhilarating is an understatement.
I don't know if one, two, or all three of these upgrades is responsible for my increase in performance, but it was worth every penny.

Very nice product, all materials provided were top notch. You guys out did yourselves again. Installed on my 96' 850R and wow, sounds much better than the stock unit. Install was a breeze, took about an hour. Matched with my IPD/TME exhaust and Stage 2 chip(Inmotiontuning), provided much more throttle response and lesser lag. Thanks again IPD for another phenomenal product.

IPD IS COMPLETELY UNDERSELLING THIS ITEM!!
Well I had wanted to order this but really prefer K&N Filters. I thought because of the great design I would order and then later get a genuine filter. To my surprise when I opened the box there was a genuine pre-oiled K&N filter. Also my SAS kit for my 1998 was a retail packaged K&N. This kit was really easy to install, looks great and was everything I wanted out of a short ram intake. It sounds great!
Don't hesitate to get this for a moment. It is worth every penny!

The installation went pretty smoothly. I have a 850 GLT and the only issue was that the plug (turbo control valve?) that gets mounted to the lower part of the box near the engine required me to pull the wires out of the factory loom to get them to reach. It all worked out and everything is fine, just took a little head scratching. I don't notice much noise difference in the car which is fine. I do notice the engine seems smoother and it looks sick.
