ipd MSD Ignition Coil Upgrade

ipd’s new performance ignition coil restores lost power from old factory ignition coils and provides increased performance for highly tuned setups like our stage III kit. Includes MSD coil, ipd 8mm silicone coil wire, mounting bracket, fasteners and instructions to provide a clean, simple installation. Our kit mounts the coil on rubber isolators to reduce engine vibration and it’s also designed to work with the ipd short ram intake which insulates the coil from high engine temps by locating it within the area where cool air enters the intake. ipd performance coil fits 850 and 70 series models from 1993-1998 and takes approximately 30 minutes to install.

We chose MSD for their long history of innovation in performance ignition systems. The Blaster SS coil (we include) utilizes a 70:1 turns ratio and lower primary resistance to produce their high voltage output. This compact coil produces 300 milliamps with a maximum voltage output of 40,000 volts. Primary and secondary windings are encased in Ciba polyurethane and are protected with a tough Dupont Rynite case. Lastly it is CARB E.O. approved.

Nice little unit and good install instructions.

Fit:
It fits snug against the upper lid of the airbox. I tightened the mount screws that
hold the MSD unit to the backet, so that the rubber isolation units would squish
down a bit more - that gave the unit another 1 or 2mm to fit. Also, I left the last
airbox clamp undone, because it touches the negative terminal on the MSD unit

Installation:
Not bad. Be careful drilling out the top rivets of the OEM ignition coil. Take your
time, drilling the rivets is the toughest part. Also, be sure to remove the entire OEM
bracket from the wheel well and mount the MSD unit to it...then bolt the whole thing
up to the car. Easier that way.

I found this to be a great upgrade.But then again my car is far from stock.
I have 17psi tune,turboback exh,turbo inlet pipe,FORGE CBV,K&N,OMP strut brace etc etc

I actually like the way it fits with the stock airbox as it keeps the airbox down tight.

air box fender attachment stud will not seat after coil mounting...the 2 underside air
box mounting points will just make it....not as stable as original fit but manageable....replace with short air ram kit would do the trick...

The install was simple, but after one week, one of the rubber feet broke. Good thing
the air box is holding it up or there may have been a problem. I noticed no difference
in the way the car runs or startup or anything, but then again, the car always ran
good.

great part that helps restore factory power. it's true what everyone says, the fit is very tight. very simply you just need to drill the holes on the bracket further towards the bend so the whole piece sits farther in when screwed to the bracket on the car. the shape of the coil allows the airbox to fit underneath with ease. you already have the drill bit out so it's not much more work.

Excellent Instructions and great upgrade from OE coil.
Keep in mind some minor bracket mods are required to allow coil to clear OE air filter
housing (if not upgrading to IPD air filter system). Super value throughout, highly
recommended!

Just added this to my 95 GLT. Idles much better and dyno-butt says more umph to the foot.

The install was very detailed and documented expertly. I took out the air-box to give more room, dremeled the rivets with a cutting wheel and then drilled them out on a bench. The drill bit sizes are explicit since the new bolts take that diameter, so be prepared. Also use the lock-tight supplied for the mounting bolts as well. It is cheap insurance.

My only caveat is the air-box and the back right clam[ are very close the the negative and positive wires, actually in between them, so either pull the clamp out or rubberize it to prevent any contact.

Other than that it's a good but tight fit.

I recently bought a '94 850 wagon--N.A., 5-speed, 167,000 miles. After months of patient searching, I found it on Craigslist about six weeks ago. The car had lots of issues, so the owner was only asking $1,600 in hopes that a Volvo enthusiast would adopt it and fix it up. It had all the usual problems--stuck airbox thermostat, plugged flame trap, etc. So far I've replaced the cap & rotor, installed ipd wires and ND Iridiums, replaced the o2 sensor, modded the airbox, installed a K&N, cleaned the MAF, replaced the leaking intake air tube, replaced the flame trap, cleaned the throttle body, installed ipd upper and lower torque mounts (reviewed separately), and otherwise tried to bring it up to specs. It ran a little better after all that, but the performance was still disappointing.

I finally bit the bullet and ordered the ipd/MSD coil kit. Wow--the car just woke up! Smooth idle, instant throttle response, strong acceleration--everything I expected, and more. Very easy to install--as others have noted, the fit is snug against the airbox, but not enough to be a problem. I like the laser-cut ipd logo on the bracket--too bad it doesn't show when the coil is installed. The instructions were complete and easy to follow. Total installation time: about 0.6 hr.

This is an essential upgrade for any 850. A+

Installed this product on my 98' V70 2,5T AWD couple of days ago.
Together with the ipd spark plug wire kit, and new spark plugs this was a clear difference. The engine is smoother, and sounds refreshed and works nice. The response is quicker also.. and it looks nice too!

Installation was no problem, had to modify my BSR OptiFlow filter wall a bit. But there was no problem and it fits perfect.
