ipd MSD Ignition Coil Upgrade ipd’s new performance ignition coil restores lost power from old factory ignition coils and provides increased performance for highly tuned setups like our stage III kit. Includes MSD coil, ipd 8mm silicone coil wire, mounting bracket, fasteners and instructions to provide a clean, simple installation. Our kit mounts the coil on rubber isolators to reduce engine vibration and it’s also designed to work with the ipd short ram intake which insulates the coil from high engine temps by locating it within the area where cool air enters the intake. ipd performance coil fits 850 and 70 series models from 1993-1998 and takes approximately 30 minutes to install. Please check fitment listed below to ensure products will fit your specific vehicle. Some products may include or exclude some model years or engine and transmission combinations.
We offer some products with multiple brand options. Products ending with an "E" suffix indicate Economy (non-OE) brands.

Just added this to my 95 GLT. Idles much better and dyno-butt says more umph to the foot.
The install was very detailed and documented expertly. I took out the air-box to give more room, dremeled the rivets with a cutting wheel and then drilled them out on a bench. The drill bit sizes are explicit since the new bolts take that diameter, so be prepared. Also use the lock-tight supplied for the mounting bolts as well. It is cheap insurance.
My only caveat is the air-box and the back right clam[ are very close the the negative and positive wires, actually in between them, so either pull the clamp out or rubberize it to prevent any contact.
Other than that it's a good but tight fit.
Thanks IPD.

I recently bought a '94 850 wagon--N.A., 5-speed, 167,000 miles. After months of patient searching, I found it on Craigslist about six weeks ago. The car had lots of issues, so the owner was only asking $1,600 in hopes that a Volvo enthusiast would adopt it and fix it up. It had all the usual problems--stuck airbox thermostat, plugged flame trap, etc. So far I've replaced the cap & rotor, installed ipd wires and ND Iridiums, replaced the o2 sensor, modded the airbox, installed a K&N, cleaned the MAF, replaced the leaking intake air tube, replaced the flame trap, cleaned the throttle body, installed ipd upper and lower torque mounts (reviewed separately), and otherwise tried to bring it up to specs. It ran a little better after all that, but the performance was still disappointing.
I finally bit the bullet and ordered the ipd/MSD coil kit. Wow--the car just woke up! Smooth idle, instant throttle response, strong acceleration--everything I expected, and more. Very easy to install--as others have noted, the fit is snug against the airbox, but not enough to be a problem. I like the laser-cut ipd logo on the bracket--too bad it doesn't show when the coil is installed. The instructions were complete and easy to follow. Total installation time: about 0.6 hr.
This is an essential upgrade for any 850. A+

Installed this product on my 98' V70 2,5T AWD couple of days ago. Together with the ipd spark plug wire kit, and new spark plugs this was a clear difference. The engine is smoother, and sounds refreshed and works nice. The response is quicker also.. and it looks nice too!
Installation was no problem, had to modify my BSR OptiFlow filter wall a bit. But there was no problem and it fits perfect.

Installation was a breeze until the end when I had to figure out how to install this in the tight space between my stock air intake and the mounting plate. The space is too tight to install it like the instructions say however there is plenty of space when you turn it sideways.
If iPd could modify their bracket for a stock intake setup that would be great but until then, all I had to do was install it sideways with the iPd bracket with only one of the screws holding it to the car. It is secure and clears all the other parts (with the exception of one clip on the air box that I simply bent in to accommodate the new coil). I guess I should buy a short ram intake but until then this will suffice.
The rating of 4 is simply for the brainstorming I had to do on my own to fit it without changing too much of the air box/bracket. Otherwise it's a 5 in all the other respects.

Some years ago, I did an ECU reflash and Sport Muffler upgrade. The results were more than satisfactory. Double the boost, pleasant exhaust note, great pull through the gears, and a reported HP increase from stock 236 to 285. The best fun is having what appears to be a sedate blue Brick, but running neck and neck with the pimply “Fast & Furious” crowd at the Interstate on-ramp. They keep looking over at me, unable to understand how this nerdy Volvo station wagon is keeping up with them.
But … last week I completed a few additional “enhancements”. I installed the IPD Short Ram Intake, MSD Ignition Coil Upgrade, and Heavy Duty Turbo Control Valve. Words fail me. It is like I just cured my car of asthma and installed an adrenalin injection pump.
While the IPD descriptions of these upgrades are clear that they do not increase HP, I can say with some confidence that the existing HP now arrives much earlier at the party. No more waiting for 3000 RPM to see the boost gauge needle rise. To say that it is exhilarating is an understatement.
I don't know if one, two, or all three of these upgrades is responsible for my increase in performance, but it was worth every penny.

I installed this product about a week ago now, along with the ipd wires and the tune- up kit. i really am so surprised of the difference in performance. i have owned my volvo 850 turbo wagon for about a year now, and i am already in love with the car. but after the tune-up the car seems to have come alive. Now i am looking forward to up grading everything else. thanks ipd looking forward to doing much more business with you.

Installed this on my 1998 S70 GLT with 200K on it with stock air filter box and looked at how close it was. I took factory air filter out to install the MSD ignition coil but notice the one of air filter clips and the filter box was touching the coil. So I removed the clip and took a Dremel tool to shave some of the filter box material, but not to inner box, to prevent the wires touching each other. I found a external clamp at the hardware store that perfectly clamped the air filter box to replace the clip I removed earlier. Now the engine starts up easier with the MSD coil. Great replacement/upgrade for the S70.

Had issues fitting this to my 1994 850 with the stock airbox. With the provided hardware and instructions it could not be fitted without the factory airbox being canted over and pulled out of one of its rubber mounts. I cut back the edges of the plate for the original coil (the protruding tabs with the holes need to be cut right back to the fold in the metal) and used a strip of aluminium between the bolt holes on the IPD bracket. I then used screws to afix this to the original coil plate (bolts would be better but i cant get behind there). I mounted the coil to the IPD plate using long bolts rather than the supplied rubber feet (not ideal as no more vibration absorbtion and reduced cooling around coil. This allows the coil to be mounted about 10mm further back allowing the airbox to just sit back into its bracket. I would suggest pairing this with the short air intake kit and not keeping the stock airbox. I already have a K&N filter element so i wanted to keep the factory airbox.
Car started easier and runs fine with it. Idle seems a little smoother. Otherwise it seems to be an ignition coil mostly....
how about a kit to suit cars keeping the stock airbox thats easy to fit???
