PCV Flame Trap 1988-1995 Non-Turbo Volvo uses a small in-line filter to manage positive crankcase ventilation on their 4 cylinder engines. The ventilation system incorporates a small flame trap filter (PCV) to protect against possible crankcase explosions due to a backfire. This filter is overlooked in most workshop manuals and without periodic maintenance it will plug up with oil deposits and cause excessive crankcase pressure, which in turn cause significant oil leaks all over the engine. An additional contributor to this problem is the fact that on these models, the filter and filter holder are buried below the intake manifold and pretty tough to access. We recommend checking the flame trap condition at every oil change.

This hose is tapered. It fits the iPd parts on the flame trap end perfectly (Larger diameter). However, the breather hose was not long enough to reach the turbo hose by itself. I did need to buy a coupler to add in about 10" of additional hose to connect the smaller end of the breather hose to the hose coming off the turbo. This was for a 1991 Volvo 740 turbo. This whole system had been poorly maintained by some 'Professionals". It works well now. More power, smoother running, less oil consumption. Plan ahead in case you need a few extra parts to tie everything together.

I RECENTLY HAD MY MECHANIC REPLACE THE FLAME TRAP, THE DIFFERENCE WAS AMAZING. NOW RUNS MUCH QUIETER AND (TO ME) THE ENGINE RUNS SMOOTHER. ASKED MECHANIC IF THE FILTER WAS BLOCKED, NO, BUT THE HOSE INTO THE FILTER WAS! BEST THING I'VE DONE IN THREE YEARS OF OWNING MY 240GLE.
