Volvo 200 » Cooling Fan & Clutch

As your Volvo approaches the upper eschilon in milage, fan clutch failures become more common.  If you don't hear the high flow whoosh of the fan clutch engaging occasionally and are experiencing cooling problems, especially at low speeds, you should have the fan clutch checked.

*Some 1976-1979 models were equipped with a one piece clutch/fan unit, which is no longer available.  These are easily identified by the aluminum fan blades.  To upgrade to the newer version you'll need to order both parts and also get a set of 6mm studs and lock nuts for mounting the clutch to the water pump.

The exact same thing happened to me in my 92 240 wagon. I smelled a burning smell and my temperature gauge was nearing critical. Shutting off the A/C brought the engine temp back to normal. I opened the front grill and the fan had shredded. I had it serviced at my regular garage and they had to order a replacement. They said it would be 2 days. However, like the above poster, I got a call from the shop saying it would be another 2 days because they didn't have the mounting bolts. So make sure you get those. The price I paid from my garage was less than this by about 25 bucks but then there's the installation cost - It doesn't seem like a hard job so I would recommend trying this one out first. Also, make sure, if your fan has shredded, that it hasn't compromised your compressor coils.

I was told that these fans don't really fail,so they never sell them, which is why it had to be special ordered.
Well unfortunately i was an unlucky Joe who had a VERY weird failure.
The relay which turns this fan on and off on my 1991 240 failed,so i purchased another one and installed it.Unfortunately i had not noticed the fact that two of the fan blades had broken off somehow and one of them was lodged in between the fan blades and the A/C Condenser. So the fan was not able to move when the new relay dutifully turned it on.It wasn't until i had driven a few miles all the while smelling something burning that i pulled over, removed the grill and finally realized what had happened.By then the fan had essentially cooked itself.
THIS fan-once i was able to actually install it(see below)-works WONDERFULLY.It is actually a little quieter than the original and does not seem to draw as much current.Especially when it first turns on.

W A R N I N G :If you are one of the rare Joe's who is unlucky enough to need one of these fans like i was.
MAKE SURE YOU GET THE MOUNTING BOLTS AND NUTS THAT DO NOT COME WITH THE NEW FAN!!!!!!!!
Or you WILL NOT be able to install this fan, unless you have some kind of magic touch that will allow you to remove the old ones which are meant to be permanently attached to the old fans.
I went to the parts department at the dealer to get the bolts, which are the oddest looking rubber encased things i have seen. The nuts were another story altogether.
