Volvo 200 » Battery Tray & Hold Down
 The metal battery tray is subjected to acid from the battery. The acid attacks the metal, and, over time, eats its way right through the tray. The threaded hold-down can lose its hold, and this can leave the battery hanging by the terminal wires. Replace the tray and get the hold-down clip and four included mounting bolts to bring the tray back to its original condition. The tray itself is excellent, but for best results; drill 1 centered holes on each long side of the battery tray(near edge and 2 holes total) and go to a local auto store and buy an after market battery hold-down kit made of metal (not rubber strap downs) complete with 2 thick rubber washers and 2 of the shorter version of hold down screws because there may be longer sized kits on the shelf. This is what I had to do for an Optima yellow-top battery~the best. Other cheaper batteries need the 'rounded part' of the original hold down plate ground down slightly using a grinding wheel to fit today's newer batteries as there seems to likely be a minor size difference. As far as my experience goes the original battery for the 1985' 240 DL no longer exists so these modifications are unavoidable yet simple for most handle with ease. The hold down screws that come with the kit you will find at any reputable auto store will have 'hooks' at the bottom which may need to be bent further in using a hammer to adjust alignment with bracket & wing nuts in kit.

The tray is nice, but the hold-down screw does not fit the battery that Volvo now sells for the 240. The parts guy at the dealer told me that Volvo recently switched to Interstate as the OEM for its batteries. I am apparently in the market for a new hold-down apparatus that works with this tray...
ipd CS Note: The hold down is OEM style and will fit an OEM style battery. The dealer sold you what they had, not what should be in there.
