Blower Motor Heater/AC

Blower Motor Heater/AC

If your Volvo’s heater and air conditioner blower is noisy or doesn’t work at all, it’s time for a new blower motor. Keep your windows clear and interior comfortable no matter what the season! Instructions included.

Occasionally we get feedback from customers who were surprised or disappointed that the 200 series blower motor kit they ordered was not exactly the same as what was in their car. The reason for this is that Volvo updated to a more reliable design in 1981 and the earlier style has not been available since the mid 80’s. Instructions are included and cover any necessary modifications for the all models.

Please check fitment listed below to ensure products will fit your specific vehicle. Some products may include or exclude some model years or engine and transmission combinations. The products listed on our website are for Volvos sold in the North American market. Many of the parts are exactly the same as those used in other markets, however we cannot guarantee fitment for those markets.

Update:
The kit (motor, switch, resistor) has installation instructions as part of the kit (and downloadable from the page for the kit). This is a nicely done pamphlet that has a good deal of information and explanation. The paper with the motor is much less helpful.

So to update my previous review:
1) confirmed - the wires are supposed to come out of the top of the motor -- but still go through the bottom of the heater housing.
[ In my case...red power wire was too short and had to be lengthened ]

2) The additional noise referenced before is beginning to settle down. It is the brushes and now can only be heard on low (1) - other settings the fan noise drowns it out.

It is nice to have a working fan in the car again!!

This is not the first blower motor I have replaced in a 200, but it is the first new motor (albeit non oem) I have used.
Issues:
1) Wiring on new motor was several inches shorter than old motor. Re-routing of wiring could have fixed problem (if not for #2 below) , but I cut the wires off old the motor and spliced them to the new motor.
2) Wiring on new motor came out of top of the motor when mounted which effectively shortened the wires an extra couple of inches rendering them unusable as delivered.
3) Mounting bracket was not mounted straight and so the fan blades hit the housing. The bracket had to be bent (trial and error) until alignment was achieved.
4) Unlike the old OEM motor which is sealed, this motor is open -- yielding more motor noise while running.

Note: Issues 1-3 are all due to the mounting bracket issue. This may be a one time error in production and I happened to get it...or others may be produced this way. I would assume this is such a low volume production that quality control is left to the assembler. (I found a plug in the top of the cabinet that could have been used for the wires to exit from and it appeared to be larger than the hole for the wires in the bottom. Not sure if the plug and tube would have swapped locations. This is the first time I have disassembled as much of the dashboard as I did and would never have seen the top plug if I had not done so.)

This is a good product. Installation is time consuming, but possible even for beginners if you are patient and careful. There are many steps, i.e. layers of parts, to the process. Follow the book and IPD's directions, write careful, detailed notes to yourself, take digital pictures at each stage, keep parts and fasteners from each stage in a separate zip lock baggie, and allow plenty of time, 8 hours or more. My 20 year old son did this with minimal help in one weekend. It will be possible to run the car by reconnecting the battery throughout the process, so you'll be able to get to work if it takes longer than you expected. Good luck!
