Rubber mounts will deteriorate to the point your engine will come to rest on the cross frame. Signs of fatigue are: excessive shaking of the shift lever (manual transmission cars), knocking or banging sounds when accelerating. If you have oil leaks these will speed the process of breaking down the rubber mounts.
Normally best to replace left and right side engine mounts at the same time.
